Win 10 after Restore of Full Backup slow / programs not working properly anymore

Thread needs solution

So recently my AC Unit of my Dell XPS 13 died. And because I had other Problems with the XPS I wanted to send it in.  With my Battery Pack I managed to pull a Full Backup with Acronis TrueImage 2018 and erased my Drive afterwards. But after some forth and back they sent me a Technician directly - sadly I already erased my Drive... ^^

After the Technician fixed everything I restored my Drive from the Full Backup I have on my External HDD. It took around 3-4 hours. During the Process I got a lot of Messages which I could only 'ignore' or 'retry' after searching in Google for one of the Messages I 'ignored' them and learned to do a sfc /scannow afterwards. After the Restore finished I had to restart my Laptop. When starting up, everything looked like before! It seemed the Restore worked. I did a sfc /scannow it found some Files and repaired them.

After trying out everything a bit I noticed that Windows (10) is very slow and has some other Problems.
For Example:

  • Normally when you click the Windows Key on the Keyboard you can instantly begin to type if you want to search something. That doesn't work anymore really. It's more like 50/50 that it even starts to search. If it doesn't work I have to manually click on the "Search" Icon and search from there. But if it works like described in the First Steps it takes so long. A few seconds until it displays what I typed, a few seconds to show the results, it is somehow lagging. And sometimes the 'Start' is just black and nothing happens - then you have to close it and open it again...

  • I can't uninstall some programs. For Example: Playstation Now just won't go away. The whole uninstall Process works without Problems (no Errors displayed). But it wont uninstall lol. The folder / icon etc. everything stays.

  • I can't open Plex from the Taskbar anymore. "Could not create EAE working directory." appears. After reading in the Forums of Plex they said to uninstall the Program and delete every existing Folder. I did that. Restarted. Installed it again. Still: Doesn't work. I can ONLY open it if I browse directly into the Installation Folder of Plex and start it from there (works only when opened as Administrator). Or if I start it via the Taskbar 'as Administrator' (just tested it now)

Do these Problems maybe have to do something with Permission Rights?

Now I'm thinking about erasing my whole Drive again and start from Scratch and just Restore the Data I really need because I think the Restore causes my Laptop to "lag" as described when searching something.

Kind Regards,

Did you boot from rescue media in order to do the restore, or did you install ATI onto the laptop and then restore? If the latter, I'd recommend the former.

Also, what were the errors you were receiving? Read errors?

SirPenetrator, welcome to these User Forums.

In addition to the questions asked by Philip in his reply, what were the problems that you had with the Dell XPS 13 that led into these issues?  If you backed up the laptop with problems present then these same problems would be present when the backup is restored.

You may wish to consider doing an in-place upgrade of Windows 10 on the Dell XPS - see webpage: Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

@Philip Manwaring You mean via the "Rescue Media Builder"? If Yes - I can try this Method out too.

I did the latter :/.

Correct me if I'm wrong:
As I understand it I have to use the "Rescue Media Builder" provided by Acronis and for Example, use the "Simple" Method. After that, I can connect my External HDD (on which I have the Full Backup made with Acronis and other stored Data) to my Laptop create the Rescue Media and boot from it (Ext. HDD). Is that right?

Update: I just connected my Ext. Drive with my Full Backup (Made with Acronis) to my XPS but when I choose "Rescue Media Builder - Simple" it always says "Plugin your external drive" even though I have connected it.

@Steve Smith Oh nothing Software or OS related. :) AC didn't work anymore. Had a Pixel Issue and I/O Board had to be replaced because the USB had an Error. And the Errors/Problems I'm experiencing now weren't present before.

"I/O Board had to be replaced because the USB had an Error" may have relevance here if your backup destination was a USB connected drive when you made the backup image, depending on what the USB Error was?

Regarding the Rescue Media, when using the Simple method for the Media Builder tool, then this creates the Windows PE version of the rescue media on CD/DVD or USB stick.  This method can only be used from within Windows to create this type of rescue media.  You can also download the older, Linux version of the rescue media (as a CD image .ISO file) from your Acronis account, then burn that to CD.

All types of Rescue Media need to be booted from in order to use the offline Acronis application environment to recover your computer in a safe environment from an external backup drive.

Hello Steve,

thanks again for your Answers. Sorry that I didn't explain what the Problem with my USB was. The Problem was that if you had something connected and would raise the Cable a bit that my Laptop would go into Sleep Mode. But if I transferred files over that Port I could use them without Problem on another PC. I guess the Transfer "Quality" wasn't affected by that Error.

Rescue Media:
So I guess it would be better to use the Linux Version.
I have a 128GB USB Stick here. Can I download the Rescue Media on that Stick. And proceed as following:
1. Download/Setup the 128GB Stick with the Linux Version of Rescue Media

2. Connect my Ext. HDD containing the .tib Full Backup to my Laptop

3. Connect the 128GB Stick with the Rescue Media on it to my Laptop and Restart it

4. Boot from the 128GB Stick and choose the .tib Full Backup from the connected Ext. HDD with the Rescue Media on the Stick and do the Restore again

Is that right?

128GB USB stick is too big here for using as rescue media, max size should be 32GB but you can use as small as 1GB.  The stick also must be formatted as FAT32.

See KB 58108: Acronis products: using USB sticks with more than 32GB capacity

If using the .ISO linux download file, then you will need to use a utility such as ISOtoUSB to write the file to your USB stick - an ISO is not bootable if just copied to the stick.

To use the Rescue Media, fully shutdown the computer, connect both the USB stick and your external backup drive, then reboot from the USB stick and wait for the ATI offline application to launch, then perform the restore from the backup drive.

When doing the restore, do so by selecting the Disk option at the top of the list rather than by selecting individual partitions (these will be selected automatically).  If you select by partition, you will be asked to select where to restore each partition and adjust size if needed.

The rescue media should be booted the same way as used by your Windows OS - see webpage: Check if your PC uses UEFI or BIOS for help in this area.

Hello Steve,

thanks for your Answer!

I'm now using a 2GB Mem. Stick. :)

I also just discovered, while trying to install ISOtoUSB, that I had a Permission Problem on my Temp Folder in C:\ that also caused the Problem with Plex. I just opened the Temp Folder now to gain Access to it, now I can open Plex without Problems. I was even able to Uninstall the said Program above which wasn't possible before.

But I still want to be on the Safe Side so I'm gonna Restore my Laptop again with the Way you described. We'll see if I have the same Permission Problem again after the Restore. :) But that "Slow Search Problem" is still persistent I hope that will be fixed after the Restore. *crossing fingers*

I'll report back as soon as the Restore is done to give my Feedback. Thanks again Steve for your fast Answers!

Update:

I'm stuck in the Recovery Wizard @Destination of Disk 1 I can't choose anything. I made some Pictures to show you how I proceeded.

What type of disk is your destination drive, how is it connected?  If this is a NVMe PCIe SSD and you are using the Linux version of the Rescue Media then this may not see the drive?

You last screen shot only shows 2 USB devices (both greyed out) which suggest that these are your USB rescue stick and your external backup drive, not the internal target drive.

If that is the case, then you will need to use the WinPE version of the rescue media which will have the device drivers to allow your internal drive to be selected as the destination for the recovery.

"It's an M.2 PCIe SSD.

"You last screen shot only shows 2 USB devices (both greyed out) which suggest that these are your USB rescue stick and your external backup drive, not the internal target drive."

- You're right.

Okay, I just set up my USB Stick with the WinPE Option.
Still nothing, now I get this. I can select something but it's the Drive with the Backup on and not the One from my Laptop.:
IMG_1493.jpg

Should I try to manually download a Driver for an M.2 PCIe SSD and include it when making the WinPE .iso with Acronis Program (where it says "You can add driver for better compatibility")?

Oh wait!
I'll try setting "AHCI" in "SATA Operation" in the BIOS. I just read another Thread and this helped someone. I already thought about that but just didn't try it -_-

I'll update again.

UPDATE:
Yep. It was this tiny little Option. Oh Gawd... It should also work with the Linux Option now telling by THIS Thread and Answer from Bobbo_3C0X1 (Quote from his Answer: "WinPE is not necessary for PCIE NVME hard drives - driver support is native in the default linux Acronis bootable recovery media now too"). So it just was the Option which I had to switch to AHCI from RAID ON all along. Sorry for this. But again a big Thanks for your fast Answers and Help and also your Patience! As soon as the Restore is Complete I'll write an Update again to tell if any Problems are around or not. :)

The answer is yes.  You will need to include the driver for Storage Controller in your computer that the M.2 drive attaches to .  This is typically an Intel controller.

The latest driver can be downloaded HERE

Grab the f6flpy=x64.zip download.  It is in .zip so you will need to extract the files to an empty folder somewhere.  When you build the media click on the + and point to the folder where the extracted file are.  The Media Builder Tool will do the rest.

Do not change the ACHI option in the bios.  It needs to be set to RAID.

"

"
Oh ... I was just editing my Post while you posted your Answer. I just cancelled the Restore and do it how you described. Thanks!

Out of Interest: Why not change from RAID ON -> AHCI. What would happen or what would be different If I had continued to Restore it like that?

I just read your Answer HERE
"

Pierre,

Thanks for posting back your outcome.  Your reply will certainly help other users and will allow the MVP community here to be better equiped to handle troubleshooting with these Dell machines.  It makes no sense to me why Dell manufacturing would set up a single OS drive system in RAID mode when it is totally unnessary.  In fact, with your system setup in RAID mode that means that your machine performance will take a hit from the simple fact that it must allocate the overhead resources necessary to run the machine in RAID.  On a laptop that could be noticeable when running certain applications. It only shows that since Intel has written a driver supporting both RAID and ACHI into a single driver this manufacturers production has taken the easy step for the assembly line to set all machines up as RAID with no consideration of the end user needs or machine specific requirements.  As an ex system builder I find such actions deplorable

Enough rant!  Glad you got things squared away."

Telling by that Answer it wouldn't make a Difference in my Case since I only have ONE Single SSD in my Laptop (Dell XPS 13) it would only be bad to change from RAID ON -> AHCI when I had TWO Drives. Is this right?

The NVMe drive cannot run at full speed unless the controller is set to RAID mode.  The driver is now universal, same driver for both AHCI and RAID.

Your problem with the speed of your machine is probably due to the driver not being installed in Windows after you wiped your drive.  Windows may have instead installed its own driver instead which would greatly degrade the drives performance.

Once you completed the restore process and booted to Windows open Device Manager, expand the Storage Controller entry in the tree and double click the Intel Rapid Storage entry.  Select the Driver tab and check the driver version shown.  If it is not the same as you used to add to the Recovery Media select Update Driver then, click Browse my computer for driver software, click Browse again and point to the same folder you extracted the driver files to, then click Ok, then click Next.  Your drivers will be installed in Windows.

Hello Enchantech,

Restore is done. It took around 1 Hour.

Everything works. Able to Uninstall Program mentioned before without Problems. Able to open Plex without Permission Problems. Windows Search is fast. In General, Windows is as fast as it should.

Only Thing that I had to "change/update" was the Driver of the Intel Rapid Storage, which I did as you described in your Post. Now it's up-to-date.

I also learned something. Thanks for your Explanation on NVMe.

Thanks again for your Help, Explanation, Time and fast Answers! Really helped me out here!! :)
Thank you, both!

Now I'm gonna go buy a License for Acronis True Image (Test Version runs out in 4 Days, Support is great and fast and it works as it should).  ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Kind Regards!

Glad to hear of your success, enjoy!

Hello Guys, it's me again!

I hope you all had a nice start into the New Year 2018!

While I don't have any Problems I mentioned already above I noticed some other "strange" Stuff in Windows. It's nothing too bad but I started to notice it more and more and I already Googled but seem to always get Answers to other Problems. Since I didn't have this "Problem" before the Restore I thought I might also post it here.

It's about Icons: But only Icons for Pictures or when I open "Settings" and other Windows related Apps (Like Photos/Calculator/Paint 3D - Problem is only for some Apps an not all surprisingly). It shows that I have a "Settings" Window Open but not the Icon to it. It's just an invisible Task in the Taskbar. And for the Pictures: It doesn't show me a "Preview/Thumbnail" (I'll attach Screenshots so you'll understand what I mean). This happens for .jpg & .png and .gif. I'll always have to, for every Image Type, right-click one Image with a specific Type -> Open With -> Choose another App -> Photos and tick the Box [X] "Always use this App to open .png Files". Only then the Images somehow "refresh" and show the "Preview/Thumbnail" (it also works if I just delete the affected Pictures and restore them again out of the Bin). I already checked the Settings "Choose default App for each File Type" to make sure Windows knows with which Program to "Preview" or "Open" the Picture. But it doesn't make a Difference. Mostly the Changes stay like that. But sometimes after a Restart, I'll have to do it all over again.

I also don't have any Permission Problems as before and also not in Temp Folder or similar. So the Configurations should be able to be saved properly. But somehow it doesn't work :/.
If I should open a New Thread for this - just let me know and I'll do it.

When I search for Settings.PNG

  • This is how the Settings App looks like when I search for it from Start

Taskbar View left is settings right is calc.PNG

  • This is how it looks in the Taskbar if I have Settings open. From far left is Snipping Tools - Settings - Calculator

Screenshots of the Problem doesn't display the Thumbnail.PNG

  • And this is how Picture Icons look when I view them in a Folder. That happens for .jpg / .png / .gif

Open With.PNG

  • This is how the "Photo" App and the "Paint 3D" App look like if I right click a Picture and hover over "Open With"

Edge Icon.PNG

  • Just added the Edge Browser to my Taskbar. It's right beside the Plex Icon but only visible if you hover over it or right-click it (as shown in the Picture below)

Edge Option.PNG

Kind Regards,

M.

I had something similar happen.  All of the image files showed icons like the calc.png icon above.  Also, when I clicked on the icon, I got an error message:

errorMessage1.png

I did an internet search on "Invalid value for registry" and found some recommendations on how to fix the issue, but most involved deleting items in the registry.  Then, I found a recommendation to reset the "Photos" app.

AppsAndFeatures.png

Got to Apps & Features, then select Photos, then select Advanced Options.

PhotoReset.png

Then hit the Reset button.

It fixed the problem for me.

Regards,

FtrPilot

Thanks for your Tips, FtrPilot!
Strangely I don't get this Error Message and sadly your Tip didn't work for me :( just did the Reset for all the Apps that are available in that List and have that Problem and also restarted my Laptop but that didn't help.
Even if it would work for the Apps in the List the "Settings" App itself still would be affected since that isn't in the List... Hmm... I'm gonna search for "Invalid Value for Registry" probably it has something to do with it.

Still thanks though :)

Kind Regards.

Update:

1. Tried deleting "IconCache.db" in "C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local" didn't help.

2. Tried  "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" in CMD (Admin) didn't help.

3. Tried "sfc /scannow" in CMD (Admin) didn't help.

4. Tried changing the Language Pack because I read somewhere that this helped someone else. Didn't help.

:(

SirPenetrator,

Here's some additional information on what caused my problem....and a recommendation.

On boot up a couple of weeks ago, I got a BSOD "Inaccessible boot device"

So, I restored my latest backup tib.  After the restore, the computer booted, no problems.  Next morning at boot up,  I got a BSOD "Inaccessible boot device"...not learning my lesson, I restored the latest backup tib. After the restore, the computer booted, no problems.  Guess what happened the next morning?   I got a BSOD "Inaccessible boot device"

So, I did some internet research and found the following link:

https://www.windowscentral.com/how-fix-update-causing-inaccessible-boot…

I followed the directions in the link and it did not solve my problem.

What I did do was to restore an image from prior to the Fall Creators Update.  Then, next morning, my computer installed the Fall Creators Update...with success.  Subsequent boot ups worked, no problems....except the jpg and png image files had icons like you showed above, and I got the error message that I show above.  That's when I found the suggestion to reset the "photos" app, performed the reset, and then all worked for me.

So, if you have an older backup tib file, you may want to restore it and see if that fixes your issues.  If it does, then you can restore the user library files from your latest backup doing a file/folder recovery.

Might be worth a try.

Regards,

FtrPilot

Hello FtrPilot,

thanks for your Answer!
Sadly my only Backup I made is from after the Fall Creators Update. I did the Backup because I thought I had to send in my defective XPS 13 but then they decided to send me an On-Site Technician after I already had to wait 3 Weeks for an Answer. If I knew that from the Beginning I wouldn't have reset my whole Laptop lol. :'D

I also tried a Solution which included deleting old Registry Entries - but that Solution was from 2015 so the whole Registry Path is different now... lol Gonna keep searching the Web.

Strangely when I view the Apps via "Apps & Features" they are somehow able to display the right Icons. Like shown in this Screenshot for the App "Fotos/Photos" but when I search them they are shown as in the Screenshots above... (the two Flowers)AppsnFeatures.PNG

Still thanks though for your Help!

Kind Regards,

M.

What app are the .png files associated with?  What happens if you associate the .png files to another app such as photoshop?

Sorry for my late Answer.
Now they are associated with the "Fotos/Photos" App. The only Picture, atm, which doesn't display the right Thumbnail now is .jpg (Before, every Picture Format had the Problem not only .png - I just did a Screenshot of 2 .png Files with the Problem)

I now set PS as the Standard Opening Application. What it does: It displays the PS Icon. So the Computer is able to change and display an Icon. I now changed it back to Fotos/Photos and it's a white Piece of Paper again. As shown in the Screenshots with the .png Files above.

It looks like this atm in my general Pictures Folder (with only 1x .jpg not being able to show the Thumbnail):
Preview.PNG

And the Folder with all my Screenshots for this Thread/Problem here looks like this:

Icon Problems.PNG

After right-clicking one of those .png Files and Open With -> Choose another App -> Photos and tick the Box [X] "Always use this App to open .png Files" it looks like this (2 of the Screenshots somehow still can't display the proper Preview - that's strange why can the other Files with the same File Type display their Thumbnail but not the 2?):
2 left.PNG

And every new Screenshot I take or Picture I save it saves them without the Thumbnail - only after doing: Open With -> Choose another App -> Photos and tick the Box [X] "Always use this App to open .png Files" it displays the Thumbnail...

Strangely:
When I save a Picture from the Internet or just the Screenshot I can instantly open them and it opens them with the right App - > Fotos but the Thumbnail doesn't show. It only shows up when I right-click the File and tick "Always use this App (Fotos) to open .xxx Files" even though Windows already knows that. I just tested that on the Desktop and after doing that "Always use...." Procedure the Desktop somehow "refreshed" and the Thumbnail Updated itself to the actual Picture.

I also noticed that the Apps that are invisible in the Taskbar and have the "2 Flower Thumbnail" when I search for them are only the new Win 10 Apps. I just opened 5 different Apps: Photos, Settings, Paint 3D, Calculator & Alarm & Clock and it looks like this:

5.PNG

From your descriptions of the issue you have I believe you have file association corruption.  In other words some file types are not associated correctly to the proper application as specified by the applications install file.  This causes the blank or white icon display.

I am providing link that explains how to change file type association per application and how to reset to default application file associations.  It should fix your issues to reset to defaults.

Look HERE

Hello Echantech,

Sadly resetting the default application file associations didn't help.
I even tried to set "Fotos" again for .png Files while having a Folder open with .png Files with no Thumbnails. It didn't change anything.

Only after right-clicking one of the four Images with no Thumbnails and doing: Open with -> Choose another App -> Marking "Fotos" and ticking the Box "Always use this App to open .png Files" 2 out of the 4 Images refreshed in the Folder and are now showing a Thumbnail.
But the other 2 Images are still without a Thumbnail.

I now had to do the same "Open with" Procedure but it only affected one Image at once. So I had to do it for each Picture separately.

But even if resetting the file associations would help there would still be the missing Icons for every Windows (Store) App; Settings, Paind 3D, Edge, Calculator etc. - where I also tried resetting the Application which didn't help too.

Windows is getting more and more Complicated over the years.

I can only suggest that possibly a reset of the problem apps may work since the App Store seems to be in play here.  See the link HERE

Little Update:

All Windows Store / Win10 Apps now show an Icon in the Taskbar! (Edge, Calculator, Paint 3D, Settings, etc.)

I don't know when exactly this happened - I just randomly tested Edge the other Day and saw the Icon in the Taskbar :D

Maybe it was this that made that change-> "resetting the default application file associations".
Now I only need to get the Icons working when I search for them (Start) :)

"I can only suggest that possibly a reset of the problem apps may work since the App Store seems to be in play here.  See the link HERE" that was one of the First Things I did since FtrPilot recommended this too. But I'll try this over and over now maybe it does change something in time :).

Kind Regards,

M.
