Acronis TI not deleting older backups

Thread solved

Acronis TI 2019 just keeps adding backups to my external drive until I get a message that there is not enough space for a new backup.  I then go and delete them manually to leave only 7.  Maybe I don't understand what a "version chain" is?  I want to always have a full backup available and 6 incrementals. I should not have to be manually deleting the older ones and I may inadvertantly be destroying a "version chain" or something that would be needed for a full restore/recovery action?  Any help here with how this should be configured?

Hello Melon,

thank you for your posting! Version chain is considered to be the first full backup + all dependent incrementals, in your case this will be 1 full and 6 incrementals created after it. If you configure Acronis True Image to store 7 version chains, then in fact you will need space to store 7 version chains (49 backup slices) and one Full - because previous version chains are not deleted unless there is a new full backup present (beginning of the chain 8). After the 8 full backup has been created, the oldest version chain (1 full + 6 inc) will be deleted.

Mary, welcome to these public User Forums.

Your settings will cause 7 backup version chains (7 x Full backups plus 7x5 (35) Incremental backups) to be created, plus a further Full backup before any older chains get deleted by automatic cleanup.

A version chain is a Full backup file plus 5 Incremental files where these all share the same _b1_ (chain number _b2 or b3 etc).

Change your cleanup rule to 'Store no more than 1 (or 2) recent version chains' instead of using 7 here.

When needing to clean up older backup files / chains, then please use the 'Clean up versions' tool for the backup task from the ATI GUI - this is found by clicking on the caret 'v' to the right of the task name to reveal a drop-down menu of options.
