Acronis True Image 2019. Error 0x40011: Link target was not backed up.

Thread solved

Looks like incremental backup runs OK. In Acronis Activity window there are Success messages for both backup and validation.

Anyway, I see this error (I did not find this situation not in Forum, nor in knowledge database) , as follows:

I haven’t seen that error in the forums.  However, the KB article above references Acronis Backup and may apply here too.

Basically, it sounds like you may be using a junction point - a symbolic Iink to a file or folder that exists on the source drive, but where the data is actually located elsewhere (a different disk, partition or volume).

I personally have setup a junction point for my iTunes device backup folder (which exists in the users profile under %appdata%) as I don’t want iTunes creating large iPhone/iPAD backups in my user profile on my OS drive.  So, when I navigate there in Windows, the junction point makes it act like it still lives there, but in reality, the iTunes iPAD/iPhone backups are being made on a completely separate F: Drive.

However, I don’t receive this type of error - it just seems to realize that the data for folder where I created the junction point link doesn’t actually exist on the source disk and as a result, it doesn’t try to put that data in the Acronis backup.

So, have you made any junction points or symbolic links (like moving program files or user profiles to a non standard OS location)? If so, that’s likely the cause of this error.  I would still recommend you contact Acronis technical support for further investigation though.

Thank you very much, Bobbo

I'll do some investigations and will answer you in couple of days

Valery,

I myself relocate user data folders to a secondary drive and have for years.  The  issue with backup not backing up such folder data has been around for a long time.  The solution as you have found is to backup that data separately from everything else.

The upside is that backups of user data will run much faster by itself versus the entire C: disk!

Glad you have it working for you now.

:)

Valerie,

Nice write up! Yup, that's exactly it and backing up the junction point separately is indeed the way to go.

Junction points with user profiles can be more problematic than other locations. I found this out the hard way with Robocopy because it already has a looping junction with "documents" and "my documents" and everything else with "my" in it. I ended up with millions of nested version of these folders when all I wanted to do was copy profile data from one computer to another. This is to support legacy XP and Win7 in modern Windows 8, 8.1 and 10.

Ultimately, junction points allow applications and Windows to redirect to the real physical location of the data. However, they don't allow Acronis to back that data up since it does not actually exist on the source drive (most home backup products backup at the sector / block level) of the source disk(s) so they don't follow the junction path to where the data is stored.

Thanks,

I understood this problem, but Microsoft tricks are terrible!

My be not only them and probably, there is no other way to implement folder relocation

Anyway, what about disappeared backup of following folders from disk C: 3D, Desktop and Downloads?

It's another Microsoft junk - you fix one problem and them create you a new one! Above was only a rhetorical question.

All is OK and you helped me very much to solve a problem. More of this, your Robocopy (I used this program in the past) experience is very important and useful.

But personally, I prefer FastCopy (https://en.lo4d.com/s/fastcopy-vs-robocopy). On the other hand,  FastCopy might also go crazy with Microsoft junсtions.

So, one more time, thanks for your help. Had a nice weekend - it's coming!

All the best from hot Tel Aviv,

Valery
