Acronis True Image and Active Protection 2019 using over 80% of i7-8550U CPU and overheating computer.

Thread solved

I noticed my laptop continuously getting hot and the fan turned on high, so I started to turn a lot of programs off that I don't frequently use that were set to start at startup. (see picture from CCleaner of what all I shut down at start up).

Prior to me booting this time (my current session), my CCleaner program was exactly as shown in the attached picture except for Acronis which was still set to come on at start up (I took that picture this session just after setting acronis to not come on at startup).

Upon noticing my fan turning on and computer getting hot right now, during my current session, I checked to see what was going on in task manager. I took a screenshot of what I was seeing. Acronis Active Protection Service CPU=55% and Acronis True Image 2019 26.9%, for a combined total of 81.9%. I have 16gb ram, i7-8550U, so something doesn't seem right, so I ended up turning it off in start up via CCleaner, and ended task in task manager.

Something doesn't seem right for it to be using that much in terms of resources considering the resources I have on my computer. Any idea as to what is going on? I was having problems with this exact same thing last week, so wiped my hard drive and I reinstalled an old backup last week. The old backup was from about 8 months ago, and I hadn't had problems like this for a while after I made that backup, but after the reinstall this week of the backup and updating all of my updates, it's doing the same thing. Or is this normal and to be expected from time to time?

The only other program I had open and actively using, at least aside from background processes, was Firefox with two tabs open. I have 0 scheduled backups for Acronis (I only do one time backups a few times a year, never scheduled).

John, seems it took some days for your original topic here to appear in the forums.

For reference for any other users.

John, please open the ATI 2019 main GUI and then look at the Protection tab to see if it shows that ATI is monitoring any of your active system processes, as this is known to cause increased CPU usage.

If there are monitored processes, then if these are known to be safe, set an exclusion for them to stop the monitoring when they are used.

See KB 62113: Acronis Active Protection slows down applications without a valid digital signature that modify many files in a short period of time - for more information.

Also KB 60193: Acronis True Image 2018, 2019 and 2020: Active Protection blocks legitimate applications

and KB 60173: Acronis True Image: troubleshooting issues with Acronis Active Protection

Active Protection is the most likely cause of the performance issues you are seeing given that is also shown with high CPU.
