ATI 2019 locks up system every time I attempt a full backup

When a backup runs automatically, or when attempting it manually I find the computer locked up and the CPU fans are running full. The system does not respond, and a reboot is necessary. At first I thought this may be something else going on at night when automatic backup runs, but I fired it up manually during the day, and it behaves the same way. The log gives no clue for me. The system and application event viewers give no clue. I simply see the computer is rebooting from an abrupt shutdown. This all quit working about June 22, and has run for months reliably before that since doing the 2019 upgrade.

Lee, as you observed nothing in the log file identifies a possible explanation.

Have by change recently updated to the latest build of WIndowS, if so it may have "inadvertantly" have broken the installation. Try doing a repair installation of ATI 2019 from you account - make sure it is the full version and not the web version. Then run as administrator and select repair rather than uninstall. While it is possible that there is a problem with either the source disk or destination disk, there is usually some indication of this in the log file. You could try running chdsk with the appropriate parameters.

Lee, the log shows that your backup includes several partitions from your source disk.

Create Backup Archive From: Disk 2; FAT16 (1-1); RECOVERY (1-2); OS (C:) To file: E:\Acronis\My disks

Then the following messages before the log ends prematurely.

01/07/2019 23:00:04 :177   Writing full version to file: My disks_full_b102_s1_v1.tib
01/07/2019 23:00:04 :277  Pending operation 173 started: 'Creating partition image'.

Please try creating a new backup task and selecting each of the above partitions separately to see if the backup will succeed or not?

ATI 2019 looks to be stumbling on creating a partition image of Disk 2, assuming that it processes the list shown in that specific order, so running a CHKDSK /F for Disk 2 would also be a recommendation here.

The final recommendation is to download and run the Acronis VSS Doctor tool (link below) to check that there are no underlying VSS / Snapshot issues at work here, as that is the key component used when creating a partition image.

From your hints, I am thinking I may have a messed up partition, I went to check this with EaseUS Partition Magic.

I see additional partitions on disk 2 and 3 that I can not explain. Disk 1 is my 1 TB SSD system drive. Disk 2 was ONLY supposed to have the D drive partition. Disk 3 an 8 TB dedicated E backup drive.

Since disk 3 should only contain the E drive partition I could reformat this and recreate the one single partition. I loose my older valid backups in this process. I could then copy the D drive (the valuable stuff) to the repaired drive 3 temporarily, and rebuild the D drive then as well, and then bring the contents back

I would then delete my backup scheme and recreate from scratch within ATI 2019.

Windows Disk Management tells me all of these partitions are "healthy". I know CHKDSK /F will operate on drive letters, so I don't know a way to check these ancillary partitions on the drive.

That's my plan. These steps are going to take a bit to perform, so will give these a try tonight.

You could try assigning a drive letter to these partitions in disk managment. Or use the HDD manufacturers untility to check the HDD. This may be most successful solution. They are usually located in the support area of the manufacturer's www site.

I have successfully backed up 2 nights in a row now. BTW I had verified file structure on all disks involved, and even did a surface scan of the infamous disk 2. All of that was good. Removing superfluous partitions did the trick. I still have not figured out WHERE these came from out of the blue, and seemed to be the cause of the ATI 2019 lock up. Thank you all in the Acronis community for taking time to respond to my question. These ultimately led to the answer.
