Backup of C drive will not complete

Thread solved

The C drive on my MacBook Pro is suddenly unable to be backed up on True Image.  Not sure why this is happening.  I backed up my external Samsung SSD drive today without a problem.  But when I back up the internal hard drive on my Mac, I get a message that says "last backup has failed."  I start the process again, and it seems to be backing up -- the progress bar makes it to about 40% before it quits and I get this message.  I've tried it now about eight times!

The last several logs say this:

Can someone please help?

I'll note that I recently moved my computers and the Drobo device that holds all the backups.  Not sure if that has something to do with this problem.

It's also a little frustrating that Acronis no longer supports True Image 2019...

Nothing in the log file strikes me as helping pinpointing what the problem is.

It is possible that something went wonky when you shifted the Drobo, but other than a loose connection I cannot think of anything. Am I correct that you are using device name rather than IP address for the Drobo; if you are using IP address the IP address may have changed when you moved it (unlikely but possible).

Is the Macbook connecting to the network via ethernet or WiFi; if WiFi it may be the QoS setting on the router has changed (could also impact ethernet connection).

Just did some research, and there are Drobo devices that are direct attach rather than NAS (as I had assumed). If direct attached have you tried replacing the cable between the Drobo and the MacBook? Have you tried a different port on the MacBook? Are you connecting via a hub?

Sorry, more questions and answers. But best I can do! (I do not have a Mac or a Drobo) - if the issue is Mac specific (which I doubt), posting on the Acronis True Image for Mac Forum may produce an answer. Most uses on this forum use Windows OS.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for taking a look and giving me your thoughts.  With the help of a friend, I will take a look at the network settings later on today.  But I still wonder why backing up my external SSD drive (which is attached to my Mac) works.  If there were network problems, wouldn't backing up that drive also have errors/problems?  By the way, my Drobo is attached the router, not directly to the MacBook Pro. My MacBook is attached to a hub.

I will try posting on the Mac forum and see if anyone can help.

Just FYI:  here are some other things I tried.

  • using First Aid on the Mac to scan the disk for errors.  It didn't find anything as far as I could tell.
  • doing a scan with Norton 360.  It did find some problems and fixed them.  But that ultimately did not seem to make any difference.  I had the same problems again when backing up.
  • I took off some files that I had recently created on the C drive that had audio and midi on them.  I usually put them on my external drive.  Again, no difference.

I'm wondering if using Norton "Clean" would make any difference.

Thanks for the additional information. The restatement of the fact that the problem is with backup of the internal drive makes me wonder if there is a problem with the snapshot process - not sure how it is implemented on Macs but Windows uses VSS and if there are issues with VSS it can cause havoc with backups.

Two suggestions, post a summary of the information you have provided on the Acronis True Image for Mac Forum and have a look at the user manual which can be downloaded from here, and see how the snapshot is created. This may then help in finding out if there are issues with that process.

At this stage I would hold off on using Norton to "Clean".

Another thing that may help is to check the free space on the internal HDD, it may not be sufficient to create the snapshot; try emptying the Trash/RecycleBin or whatever it is called on Mac; it may help to do a restart after having done so.

Spent a couple of hours this afternoon trying to troubleshoot both Acronis and the Drobo.  One thing we discovered was that the "public" folder on the Drobo (which is where the target folder for my backup is) was not checked as mounted and connected.  And there was a message at the bottom of the Drobo Desktop window that said "The Drobo server is not accessible."  So I checked the "mount" box next to the Public folder and got it connected.  Everything seemed to be rather slow (internet, mail, etc.) so I unplugged / turned off everything - my machine, the Drobo, and the modem and router.  Then turned it all back on.  Then did a backup.  And it failed again.

This time, the log gave quite a bit of information and quite a few error messages.  Here it is:

I'm wondering what the heck "file: /private/bs_hudson/workspace/master..." is

I feel like everything I've done so far has made things worse...

Charlotte, we are primarily Windows users in this forum with little or no experience of using the Mac version of ATI.

Working backwards a little:  the references to /bs_hudson/ etc are purely internal diagnostic messages from the Acronis application and only of use by the developers, so do not refer to any locations on your own computer.

The key message in the log data that stands out for me is:

2020-03-24T20:28:38:627: Error 0x1703ef: Read error or data content is corrupted.

This would suggest that there is a file system issue with your source drive rather than an issue related to the storage destination on your Drobo NAS.

The fact that you can successfully backup a different drive would confirm that this issue is specific to your C: drive only instead of being a more general problem.

I would suggest trying to make a different type of backup of the C: drive, i.e. if the failing backup is a Disks & Partitions type, try making a Files & Folders backup (of the user files only if this is your OS drive).

You would need to use the tools provided with your OS for checking the drive, or else any tools provided by the disk manufacturer.  Sorry but my lack of Mac knowledge limits my advice.

Steve,

Thanks for reading and responding.  And thanks for the tips about specific info in the log.

Just to note, I did post on the Acronis Mac forum.  So far I have received no responses to that post.

I tried one more thing last night.  I created a new target folder (inside the Public folder on the Drobo, where all the other target folders are), and setup my C drive to back up to that.  It worked!  I guess I'll be using that new folder from now on.

I'm curious to know what went awry with the original target folder (and why things got even worse), but I'll probably never find out.

Charlotte, that is strange that creating a new target folder has resolved this issue, especially given the error message being thrown by ATI but very good news that the backup is working correctly now with the new destination.

Thank you for sharing the outcome of this issue for others to be able to discover if needed.
