Backup fails after update to Windows 10 October version

Thread needs solution

My backup will not start. I get this error message. "... plug in the external drive." The external drive is plugged in since I can reach the files. This problem started yesterday after I updated Windows 10 to the October update.

Alan, this is a known issue with changes made by major Windows Updates and the solution is to reselect the Source or Destination that gives the issue.  The core issue is that drive identifiers get modified by these updates which makes Acronis believe the original drive is not connected, reselecting the drive again resolves the issue.

Yup - Windows 10 major upgrades tend to resize partitions in order to create a new "Windows Recovery Partition" that includes the winre.wim used for native Windows repair and recovery.  In the process of the upgrade, the partition changes, end up modifying the disk identifier and so the source of the backup task usually needs to be "re-picked in order to update this change in the backup task too.

Another possibility is that the drive letter assigned to the drive has changed; this is more likely to happen if it was not attached during the Windows 10 update. Again this should be solved by reselecting the target drive.

This should not happen as Acronis no longer uses disk ID, it uses partition ID - this could also cause issues if as suggested in earlier responses a new partition is added to the boot disk.
