BSOD errror IRQL Not less or equal

Thread needs solution

I have a new Dell XPS 13 with Windows 10.   All of a sudden I cannot run Acronis back-ups.   As soon as it starts the computer crashes with the Blue Screen of Death and the error code IRQL Not less or equal.

I spent an hour on the phone with Dell who updated various drivers.   As soon as I tried the back up, crashed again

I have uninstalled and re-installed Acronis to make sure I have the latest built.   Crashed again

I made a new back-up scheme to run on a different external drive plugged into a different USB port.   Crashed again

I have now uninstalled ATI and the laptop is running fine.   I can export folders to the external drive without a crash, so the problem seems to be with ATI

Of course, the 2019 is no longer supported.  I now wonder if its worth paying for the upgrade to 2021 and think its probably not

BG, are there any clues in the lead up to this BSOD issue, i.e. did anything change on the laptop from the time when ATI 2019 was working without issue to when you started seeing the BSOD crashes?

Did the laptop still give the BSOD with ATI 2019 installed but not being used to do a backup?

See KB 46370: Acronis Software: Troubleshooting Operating System Crashes and KB 45631: Acronis Software: Troubleshooting Application Crashes which have specific guidance on investigating various problems of this nature.

My initial thoughts are that this may be related to the Acronis Filter Driver used by ATI with VSS which has been known to cause some similar crashes if the registry entry is removed or changed incorrectly.  If this is causing the issue then I suspect that installing a later version of ATI wouldn't resolve it until the core issue is sorted.

BG, Check to see what updates may have been done to your system just before these problems started occurring. My guess is a Windows update or driver update which has caused the problem.
