Building NAS, Backup and Copy Questions

Thread needs solution

The Background

I recently upgraded and an happy with the new version.

I'm building a windows 10 pro home server. It will replace an old NAS and a newish laptop serving as a 24/7 home media server at this time.

It will be a file repository for common files, a backup machine, a media server, and a remote desktop for when needed. It has 3 drives, the main SSD, a hdd and a usb drive. The two latter drives are for various backups of the main SSD.

The important common files are currently backed up daily with 30 days of backups available using True Image and this will also occur on the new server. It's exactly what I want for these files.

The problem:

I want to copy new/changed files only, scheduled, from the SSD to the two backup drives. Not  a 2 way sync. I don't want them to be in container files. My NAS does a simple copy like this.True Image appears to put them in container files only, or so it appears. I have not tried all options yet.

Can I do this with True Image 2019? I'm under the impression I can't. I heard this is possible using older versions. I still have True Image 2013 available. Or, should I use a free sync program from the internet; I found several that look promising.

Bob, ATI will always want to store your new/changed files within image archive containers (.TIB files) if you use the scheduled Backup options.

There is a Synchronisation feature but this works only between separate computers (with both running ATI) or to the Acronis Cloud - there is no option here to synchronise to another drive or to a NAS device etc.

Windows has a built-in tool called RoboCopy which you can use to do what you want but you would need to set up a script / batch command file for this as it does not have a GUI front-end.

Other third-party sync tools may be an easier option for your specific purpose otherwise.

Thanks. I depend on ATI for bare metal backups and my scheduled backups. The just plain copy is new for me in this context.

I found a robocopy gui. It looks a little terse. I'll study it a bit. The open source sync programs look a little better, or at least easier to use.

Bob, give Syncback Pro a try (https://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/sbpro.html) and see if it meets your needs for backing up your changes only. I've used it for years along with ATI. It is super powerful with LOTS of options and requires that you read the help files to get the full benefit. I'm not an expert with it but well above the average user.  One of the main reasons I used SBP is that it allows me to directly access the backup files via my file explorer whereas ATI stores everything in a TIB file. Initially, this threw me such a curve I avoided ATI for backing up my data. Also SBP offers other options that ATI does not. They are two different applications for different needs. I suggest using both.
