Change backup source without re-upload?

Thread needs solution

I have a backup going to Acronis Cloud - I want to move one subfolder out of the backed-up folder to a different drive, and make it either a new backup set, or an extra source folder the original backup set. Is there any way this can be done without the files needing to be uploaded again? The files are nearly 200GB. I'm swapping my main hard drive for a smaller SSD.

Andrew, welcome to these public User Forums.

My understanding is that you should be able to simply make the folder change to move your 200GB folder to the second drive and just continue with the Cloud backup without making any changes to the Source selection.  This should be seen as the folder being deleted and the version of that folder data held in the Cloud should be 'consolidated' in due course depending on your backup settings for how many versions to keep and for how long.

There will be a period of time when the moved folder will still exist in the Cloud backup data, where this will be duplicated if you create a new Cloud backup for that data from the second drive.

Would the 200GB be re-uploaded, or would Acronis recognise that the contents of the new backup set match a folder from a previous backup?

Andrew, if you create a new backup for the moved 200GB then it would be uploaded again as I doubt that there is any mechanism on the web server to recognise that this is data you have moved from one location to another on your own computer.

Hi,

I have to bring this topic up once again.
I'm using AT2019 17750 with Windows 10 (17763.615). I have an unencrypted c:\ (SSD - source) drive and and Bitlocker To Go encrypted E:\ drive (SD Card - target). The target is a professional (U3) SD card (~70MB/s).

I scheduled a weekly backup fort drive C:\.
Until the 22nd of June the backup worked fine. Without any configuration change (The system gets Windows patches regularly) the backup stopped working. I first didn’t care much because I thought it was related to a pending reboot. The other day I thought it was related to hibernation because I had to change location without shutdown the system – but now I took some time to analyze the issue.

The Bitlocker To Go volume gets unlocked automatically during the boot process. I can access all files on this volume without any problem. But now I get the message from Acronis that I should unlock or decrypt the volume:

It’s a German installation – sorry for that. I also gave the Acronis VSS Doctor a try – without success.

A new Backup configuration to the same target brings up the same error message. I don’t understand why it stopped working.

What should I do?
Is my configuration not supported?

I can only offer two suggestions here:

  1. Disable BitLocker on your backup SD card drive, test that the backup works correctly, then try re-enabling BitLocker again and test again.

  2. Open a Support Case direct with Acronis or do so after trying option 1. if it hasn't been solved.
