Clone a 1TB HD on a 500GB SSD

Thread needs solution

I have a PC DELL Precision 3620 with a 1TB HD (HGST 1TB 7K1000-1000). And a Win10 OEM preinstalled.

Now i want to switch to a SSD SAMSUNG 860EVO with 500GB.

The original HD is almost empty (the PC is new).

Is it possible to clone the original disk on the new SSD even if it is smaller ? What Acronis product can do this job ?

Thank You,

Martino, welcome to these User Forums.

It should be possible to clone your 1TB HDD drive to your new Samsung SSD using Acronis True Image 2019 but I would strongly recommend that you make a full Disk & Partitions backup of the original HDD drive to an external drive before attempting to do so.  This is your protection against any mistakes that might be made.

We would normally recommend using Backup and Recovery for this type of change instead of using Cloning, as this is a safer method.  With Backup and Recovery, you create the full backup on the external backup drive, then shutdown your computer, remove the original HDD and replace it with your new SSD drive, then boot the computer from the Acronis Rescue Media and Recover the backup image to the new SSD drive.  The key advantage of this method is that your original HDD can be stored in a safe place, secure in the knowledge that you can always reverse the disk change if needed to get back to your starting point.

Thank You,

how can i generate the "Acronis Rescue Media" ?

To do a full Disk & partition Backup, and then Recover the backup image to the new SSD, i need Acronis True Image

or Disk Director ?

From within ATI you can create recovery media (either on USB stick or DVD/CD). Open ATI, select tools from the listing on the left side of the ATI app. This brings up the tools and you then select "rescue media builder" and select the "simple" option. When you run the rescue media, you need to do so either as Legacy or UEFI depending on the settings for your Dell PC. Looking as the specifications it appears to be a UEFI system.

To be on the safe side you should check to confirm if the Dell PC is using UEFI - I am not an expert of this but doing a search for "PC uses UEFI or BIOS" brings up several links that will help you work that out.
