Clone Disk fail

Thread needs solution

Hi all,

I'm trying to upgrade my desktop pc by using Acronis True Image 2019, Build 21500 to clone my old 1 TB HDD to a new 500 GB Crucial SSD. After the 90 minute process seems to be almost finished, I receive the error message Disk cloning failed. See log for details.

Drives:

[WDC WD1001FAES-60Z2A0 (1000.20 GB) -- drive 0, s/n WD-WCATR3448063, rev 06.01D06] to
[CT500MX500SSD1 [Hard drive] (500.11 GB) -- drive 1, s/n 21022C69C5CD, rev M3CR032]

Windows: Windows 10 Home, Version 1909

I generated a System Report but I wasn't sure which logs to view.

v c, welcome to these public User Forums.

The build number for your ATI 2019 product suggests that this is an OEM product supplied with a disk drive purchase.

See KB 2201: Support for OEM Versions of Acronis Products which applies to all OEM versions of ATI supplied with hardware purchases.

The log file for a failed clone operation will depend on how the clone is being performed?

If it is done from ATI 2019 running in Windows, then the log will be found in C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Logs\ti_demon.

If you have created and used the Acronis Rescue Media to boot your PC and perform the clone, then the log is lost as soon as you reboot the PC so has to be saved while still in that rescue environment.  To save the log, click on the Logs option, then right-click on the top line of the log and take the Save option from the menu that is shown.

The most likely issue when cloning from a 1TB HDD to a 500GB SSD is simply that the data on the HDD is too large to fit on the smaller drive.

Thanks Steve. I'll reach out to Crucial for support. But yes, I was attempting the clone using ATI in Windows, so I was able to find the log. If it's easy for you to take a quick look, do you think my problem could be solved by doing what you've recommended in the past?

"I would recommend trying to either Shrink that 914GB C: partition in Windows Disk Management to get it down to around 445GB in size, or else download a copy of the free MiniTool Partition Wizard software and use this to do the same resizing of the C: partition before retrying the clone operation."

v c, sorry for not replying sooner but only just found your reply above with the log information.

From the log, the issue is with trying to resize your HP_RECOVERY partition where ATI is trying to reduce the size from 12.18 GB down to 10.91 GB!

This partition is most likely to be a factory restore partition and would take your PC back to the OS that it was originally shipped out with, which may not be the same as that you have now!  If the PC came with such as Windows 7 or 8 and you now have 10, then you may just want to make a backup of that partition then delete it before trying the clone again!
