Failed read from sector but chkdsk says no errors but surface test shows 2 errors

Thread needs solution

I've used acronis on at least 15 work computers to clone from hd to ssd with no issues. This one PC gives me the failed to read data from the disk and I've read on the forums and web its due to a bad sector. But the computer functions fine, I just wanted to upgrade to the ssd.

I ran chkdsk and it said it found and repaired the issues. Ran Acronis again, still gave the same error. Ran chkdsk again and said there are no issues. Then I installed easeus and minitools partition and did a surface test on C:/ and they both found 2 sectors it marked as red being bad I guess, but chkdsk don't see them now it seems?

How can I proceed to make this clone work? Can I just skip or ignore those 2 sections and it will clone ok? Thanks!

Joseph,

I take it that C drive is an HDD?  If yes and you are using the NTFS filesystem you can try running chkdsk /b (NTFS only).  This command clears the list of bad clusters and rescans for cluster errors.  It also has the funtionality of the /r switch.

For more on chkdsk look at the link "Fix Disk Corruption" in my signature below.

If all else fails... take a full disk backup and restore the backup to the new drive instead of cloning as well.  Hopefully, Enchantech's suggestion does the trick though.  I'd try that, then do a full shutdown (just in case hibernation is somehow interacting with the drive still when it's time to try and clone).

After running chkdsk /B, then, from command prompt, do a shutdown /p which will force a full shutdown without hibernation (which is often used by Windows 10 Fastboot / Faststart by default).  Now try to clone using your offline rescue media and see how it goes.

You can also hold down the Shift key while clicking on Shutdown to perform a full shutdown.
