How to clone a big SSD to a smaller one

Thread solved

Hi.
I have a NVMe SSD 476GB, used 246GB on windows 10 x64, free 230GB. I want to clone it to a USB external SSD 465GB. But Acronis always said that I need 11GB more or exclude some folders in order to Clone. The error was: "You need another 11GB of free disk space available on the target hard drive to complete the operation with the current filter...". As attached picture

Any comment would be must appreciated, thank you!

Francis, welcome to these public User Forums.

Assuming that you have chosen Automatic mode for cloning your source drive to target drive, then Acronis will normally make any adjustments necessary to fit to a smaller drive provided that there is sufficient free space on the source drive to allow this.

If Automatic mode is not able to resize the partitions to fit the smaller drive, then this can be caused by either sector issues on the source drive, or having data that cannot be moved.

You could try using Manual mode and try setting the partition sizes yourself.

Alternatively, try to shrink the source drive using Windows Disk Management first - this will show you how much Windows believes the drive can be shrunk to if this action is possible.

Finally, use any diagnostic utilities provided by your SSD maker to test for any issues with the source drive plus also run CHKDSK /F to ensure that there are no MFT (Master File Table) issues that could give incorrect free space calculations etc.
