How to minimize backup size?
I'm used to WHS2011 using (incremental) storage space of about 2x disk size, but I am already well exceeding that after 2 weeks with ATI2019.
I set the backup to incremental for 7 days and to remove series longer than 15 days, bur I already have 3 full and 18 incremental backups without and removal of data, so I'm missing something and could do with some help.
I definitely don't want more than 2 full backups and would happily have more incremental backups in between

Thanks. I could not see any 'Clean up versions' so did you mean this ...
Disk backup options > Backup method > Old version cleanup rules

Tom, see the ATI 2019 User Guide: Backup operations menu where you will see the option for the new Clean up versions tool in the GUI.
See also Cleaning up backup versions manually in the guide.

Steve Smith wrote:Change your Automatic cleanup settings from what you have to use 'Store no more than 2 recent version chains' instead.
The issue with using the alternative age related settings are that that age does not start counting until after a new Full backup for a new chain has been created. The 15 days applies only to after the chain is complete and a new chain started.
If you need to clear any space, then use the ATI GUI task option for 'Clean up versions' to do this not using Explorer.
That didn't work. A 15th incremental version was stored, then a third full version was created 1.5 days later, so that already busts my budget. Next a 4th full version was originally stored as a 64kB file and is now being created a further 1.5 days later with no incremental backups in between.
To be honest I really do not understand what the settings actually are supposed to do. Is the above behaviour abnormal?
- Do I need to set to 'Store no more than 1 recent (incremental) version chain' or ...
- Do I 'Create only incremental versions after initial full version' or...
- Something else ? and in all cases, what are the trade-offs?
Also when I try to Clean Up versions, I get an error message saying.... '1 backup file could not be found'. This is not covered in the manual

Tom, I would recommend creating a new backup task with the settings that you want to use and making a fresh start in this way, this will remove any issues being brought forward by the current problem backup task.
For that current task, open the task menu in the GUI and click on the Delete option, then select to only remove the task settings (not to delete everything).
Once the task is removed from the GUI, you can then temporarily turn off Acronis Active Protection and will then be able to delete any unwanted files for that removed task using Explorer.
For your new backup task, I would recommend starting with the default Incremental backup scheme which will create a new Full backup after 5 incremental files, but you will need to turn on Automatic cleanup, where I recommend using 'Store no more than 2 recent version chains' (assuming that meets your needs).
I do not recommend using the 'incremental forever' option as this is increasingly risky as the number of incremental files grow larger as any damaged file in the list will break the version chain at that point, rendering all further files useless.

I will try what you advise, but first need to know that if the backup is working properly, that it will always delete the oldest full backup before creating a new full backup and NEVER have 3 full backups existing at once.
The ATI scheme consumes a lot more disk space that WHS2011, Windows Server or my QNAP QTS servers and I do have a lot of data to backup (up to 10TB) which is why I need to be certain of the outcome before I start.
I have always used Stablebit DrivePool to store duplicated files (having had bad experience before with RAID 1 or 5) so that there is no risk of a 'damaged' file. WHS 2011 just has one full backup and all others are incremental and I have occasionally had to go back more than a year to find a file I needed to restore without problem, so I need to understand what the real risk is with ATI as I would still much prefer the full-once / incremental forever after that.
Your default scheme allows me to store only 12 days of data, so please help me to find a workable solution.

Tom, ATI will never delete the oldest backup before creating the next new full backup, this has always been how it works.
So, if using 'Store no more than 2 recent versions' then the oldest version only gets deleted after the 3rd full backup has been created successfully. The rationale is that deleting the old backup first could leave users with no backups at all if they are only keeping 1.

This means that the storage space is huge in comparison with other backup products, so the only feasible scheme for me is to keep the first backup and then do incremental ones, so I need to understand the real risk on doing this, given the storage is duplicated.

Tom, your 10TB of data is very large, especially if this is all being captured in one backup image.
I would recommend splitting this into a number of different backups which would make it easier to manage and to recover if that were to become necessary.
I would definitely suggest having your Windows OS & applications as a separate backup from any large volumes of your data.
If you are including multiple disk drives in your backup, then make separate backup tasks, one per each separate drive.
The risk of using a single full backup then only incremental files with ATI 2019 and earlier versions is that all the incremental files are separate files and if just one file within the incremental chain becomes corrupted, damaged, deleted (attacked by malware) etc, then that chain is broken from that point onwards.
Example: a chain with 1 x full and 100 incremental files where file 36 is damaged, then the chain is only good up to file 35. All files from 36 to 100 are rendered useless and cannot be recovered.
ATI 2020 brings in the .tibx format for Disks & Partitions backups where incremental backups are all stored within a single, consolidated .tibx file, which to my thinking is more secure provided the single .tibx file does not suffer for any underlying disk failure or bad sector etc. That latter risk is mitigated by duplicating your storage.
Note: .tibx files have been used by the Acronis Backup / Cyber Backup business products for some years and are now being ported over to ATI with 2020 & 2021 onwards.
ATI 2021 is currently in Beta testing.

Currently my WHS2011 has 19TB (as 9.5TB duplicated storage) and has only 1.5TB left and this is why I am moving to a bigger HPE server, which will initially have 20TB storage with ability to add a further 16TB at a later date.
This is not large as I remaster music (individual project folders can be 6 to 8GB) and also have a large archive of music going back about 20 years that I may need to access at any time. My official music library is on a separate 3TB QNAP RAID1 server, synced to a second QNAP with an external 6TB USB backup HD

Having separate backups per each individual disk drive just simplifies any recovery when needed as you only need to have that one backup image and don't need to worry about having multiple drives within the image. It also keeps the size of these backup images lower.
Any offer is more likely to be to upgrade to ATI 2021 rather than 2020. You would be able to upgrade direct from 2019 to 2021. Acronis may offer some discounts on 2020 but the disadvantage would be that there would be no direct support for that version whereas 2021 will get the full year of support.

This morning I was planning to configure a new backup on my wife's laptop as suggested, but found that my other backup task is now corrupted as my laptop crashed last night after a successful backup. I'm not sure what to do now.
However, the error message said I can still recover data, so I tried that and saw that I could only recover a whole disk, not individual files. I suspect this is because I misunderstood backup setup and selected 'disks and partitions' rather than 'files and folders' applied to a whole (data) disk. Am I correct in this assumption ? In which case I need to discard backups on both devices.
Before I start deleting old backups, can I have a second (files and folders) backup running on the same disk to try this out?

You can create as many backup tasks as needed but only one task can ever be active / running at any time, so if you have say 4 backup tasks, you could schedule them to run 5 minutes apart and task 1 will run on schedule and tasks 2,3 & 4 will show as being 'Queued' and each will then run when the previous task has completed.
I tend to have a mix of backup tasks on my own computers.
A Disks & Partitions backup for the Windows OS drive with all applications.
Then Files & Folders backups for different types of other data, i.e. a Documents backup, one for my Virtual Machines, etc.

There was a decent offer to upgrade to 2020 subscription, so I just bought it. I could not find anything online on how to upgrade 2019 Perpetual to 2020 Subscription, so can you help?
Especially of interest is whether I have to do completely new backups to use the new .tibx format or is there a way to start with old backups?
Finally, I see a Universal Restore 2020 download, this is different to 2019 so what is this and should I continue to use the MVP tool instead?
- Log in to post comments

To upgrade your version of ATI from perpetual to subscription you just need to either enter a new serial number or else sign in with your Acronis account where the subscription is held, after which you can use the option shown on the Account page in the ATI GUI that says an upgrade is available (to do the actual 2019 to 2020 change).
Acronis Universal Restore is used to migrate a backup of a Windows OS from one computer to another computer with different hardware, where the purpose of AUR is to identify generic device drivers needed for the new hardware after the backup has been recovered to it.
In reality, with Windows 10, there is much less need to use AUR due to the improved hardware detection and handling in the OS.
AUR is not a recovery tool in itself, so does not replace either the MVP tool or the normal Acronis Rescue Media.

You don't need AUR but if it is installed, then the MVP tool will include it as an option in the Custom PE rescue media along with any other Acronis applications you have installed.

Yes, if AUR wasn't installed when you created the current MVP media, but once again, AUR is not used for any Backup activities and rarely needed for most migrations to new hardware when Windows 10 is involved.

All my 3 PCs are Windows 7 and 3 will remain so as they have hardware or versions of essential Apps that are not W10 compatible, so I guess I will have to re-create the MVP media?

I just tried to do this and I could not find anywhere in the Acronis Account that would let me enter the new serial number. It shows I have a subscription where 0/5 licences are used, but nowhere to put the new serial number.
The account link on my desktop ATI GUI will not let me type in the full subscription serial number or copy / paste the complete serial number, so I am confused what I need to do.

In the ATI GUI (on the desktop), sign in with your Acronis Account credentials.
Look at the top right corner where if you are signed in will show your Account email address - all subscription accounts need to be signed in on this page so that the ATI app is correctly associated with the subscription.
- Log in to post comments

All my PCs show my email address on top right corner and were not showing the new subscription account or an upgrade being available(just to buy one) .
As I said above, I could not type the new serial number in the box after trying right click on the serial number entry box but all options were grayed out and cut'n'paste did not work. I then tried the Cleverbridge order number that did not work, but then found that paste now worked so I could enter the new serial number and pressed Activate.
It then showed 2019 subscription with an earlier build (17750) but with later version available, which reverted me back to my original 2019 build (277xx) and exited so perplexed, I started work on something else. About 20 sec later a lone progress bar appeared on my working screen and 2020 started to install and complete, saying I needed to update 2020 to yet another version, which then completed with an immediate BSOD.
It seems however to have installed OK on my desktop. I found I have to again enter the new serial number on my laptop and activated, which again shows the 2019 earlier 17750 build, but with no later version available. Do I have to enter my serial number again?
On my wife's laptop, the same new serial number / activate process again shows build 17750 but does have a newer version available.
At no stage has my online account had an ability to enter the subscription serial number, so is this normal behaviour as I do not remember having to do this when installing 2019 originally?
Still confused, please help.
Update: I tried a second serial number entry on my laptop but still no newer version available (see attachment) so what can I do?
- Log in to post comments

Tom, for any of the computers I have which are using a subscription version of ATI, I have never needed to enter a serial number, just to sign in with my Acronis account where the subscription license is held.
On my main laptop, I did deliberately enter one of my ATI 2020 perpetual license serials in order to bring it back from being on subscription to using the perpetual license.
Note: you may want to delete the previous image you posted that is showing your VM email address (using the old NTL format) in case this attracts any more spam to your account than you already get! (I am still using a NTL email address too!)
If you click on the Downloads button in your Acronis account web page for the subscription version of ATI, what actual installer version does it offer you? When I do this for my own account, I am offered the ATI 2020 #25700 installer. You could install this manually yourself if you see the same.
- Log in to post comments

I cannot see anywhere to enter the serial number except on the individual PC GUIs.
There is no Downloads button in my online account, so I assume you mean to click the '2020 Go to downloads' link? This gives 2020 build 25700
Under products, it says I have 3/5 licenses activated, but only 2 of my PCs are actually 2020. The other whose screenshot I sent is still 2019 Build 17750 and no way to update to 2020, so why are things not working properly?
- Log in to post comments

If your online account page is showing your subscription correctly then there is no need to enter any serial for it there.
Yes, I referred to the 'Go to downloads' link where you are seeing the installer for 2020 #25700 which you can install on your computer that still has 2019 installed.
On your Account page, click on the option to 'manage' your assigned licenses and it will show you where they are assigned to, with the option to deactivate any that are no longer used.
- Log in to post comments

I have been looking for somewhere to enter the serial number without success, but on a whim click the 'Add Key' button which did allow me to enter the serial number.
This did bring up the ability to update my laptop, but installation has now stalled for the last 15min at ~98% complete.
I cannot cancel or stop the install so what next? I can only think for stopping the process in Task Manager.
Update: after 10-15 min, the process started cancelling, but 50min later is still doing so.
what to do?
- Log in to post comments

Unless you really need to turn off the laptop or the battery is about to die, I would suggest leaving it to continue for a while longer to see if it will finish the install successfully.

Still cancelling this morning, so I stopped the ATI process tree. It seems like 2020 was installed even if the install window said not.
I tried a single backup and it gave an error 'file may be blocked by another application' that 2019 did not give, so I 'ignored all' to see what happens. It only took 30sec to backup 1.3TB which makes me suspicious. I had deleted old 2019 .tib backup, but the new (slightly smaller 1.2TB) file was still .tib, not .tibx and I could not see anywhere to configure / change to .tibx
Just trying recovery to see what is there, the main folder has only 4 folders and 10 files, whereas the source has 3 Folders and about 400 .wav and .ts.files, none of which have been backed up. I tried back again and hit 'ignore' repeatedly and saw that every such file in the folder gave the same error.
As the vast majority of all that I need to backup is these 2 formats plus .mp4 and .flac, what is happening here?
- Log in to post comments

Tom, from your description it doesn't sound as if ATI 2020 has installed correctly if the installer did not finish and say it was successful.
Also your backup is simply too fast to be considered reliable for the about of data you say is involved.
I would suggest going into the Win 7 Control Panel, Programs & Features and checking there which version of ATI is actually shown as installed? (2019 or 2020?).
Personally, I would uninstall ATI via the control panel - a normal uninstall will leave behind your C:\ProgramData folders with your task configuration settings etc. After uninstalling, do a Windows restart for good measure to ensure any locked files are removed, then do a new install using the ATI 2020 full installer program (from your Acronis account downloads page) ensuring this is being done using an Administrator account. When the install is finished, sign in with your Acronis account rather than entering the serial license codes.
With ATI 2020, all new Disks & Partitions backup now use the new .tibx file format. Files & Folders backups continue to use .tib file format as do any disk backups carried forward from an earlier version such as 2019.
- Log in to post comments

I will try the uninstall / download / reinstall you recommend for my laptop. On both laptop and my desktop, it only shows an Acronis version of 24.6.257000.
While waiting for your reply, I set up a completely new nearly full 2TB disk backup on my desktop, but it again is storing only .tib, not tibx and is showing as 90% complete with only 550GB stored and only 30 min to go. I am concerned that this too may not be storing my various music and video files.
There is difference in the GUI Account display on the two devices, the Desktop left bar showing only icon whilst the Laptop bar shows words + icon.
It is confusing that there are 2 different accounts, the GUI 'Account' and the online 'My Account' which itself is reachable in 2 ways, from the GUI or directly online with about 3 extra clicks. My subscription devices were shown 0/5 in the online (subscription) Account until I either entered the serial number in the (GUI) account (which converted all my GUI accounts to 2019 Subscription) and then did 'Add Key' in the Online account, which brought up the 'upgrade available' on my laptop.

Sorry if I am being a bit thick here, but what you previously said is ... " I would uninstall ATI via the control panel - a normal uninstall will leave behind your C:\ProgramData folders with your task configuration settings etc. "
...so what does 'normal install refers to'. Do I use the Acronis uninstall popup that appears when I select uninstall in W7 Control Panel.

Tom, by a normal uninstall, I mean just uninstalling as you would any other program using the Control Panel > Programs & Features option (as opposed to using the Acronis Cleanup tool which will remove all traces of ATI and any other Acronis programs from your computer, including all your task configuration settings etc).
- Log in to post comments

I am unfamiliar with the Acronis Cleanup tool - is it what is called the 'System Clean-up' Tool in the GUI or something else? Do I not want to deliberately remove all traces of ATI before I re-install, so I can get a clean start?
I can see that all this 2020 subscription process has stopped me being able to play existing music files or use Windows Explorer as well on my laptop, so I really don't want any traces left to still cause this as I have existing WHS2011 Backups still running and am worried that these emergency backups will get corrupted.
I had already deleted all previous ATI 2019 backups and checked the destination server is completely clear. I have no other ATI programs on the laptop and no configuration settings as far as I know, so what do I really need to keep?
Given that you had previously suggested I completely remove all 2019 backup from my wife's laptop because the selected cleanup rules do not work as configured, whilst my desktop is wrongly saving 2020 backups in .tib, do I not want to completely remove ATI traces from both of those too and do a clean 2020 install - or maybe revert to 2019 perpetual? The only other ATI installation I have is the MVP rescue disk on which I have all the OS disk backups in both Win Pro and ATI 2019
My apologies for continued questions, but I don't know many things about ATI that I have not come across before, so unless you use the same exact words as I see on my W7 GUI screen, I feel really confused and my confidence in ATI is waning.
- Log in to post comments

Tom, I would suggest just doing the normal Windows uninstall of ATI 2019 at this time. The Acronis Cleanup tool is more of a 'last resort' tool and should not be used until after the normal uninstall methods have been used. (The links in my signature include one to this tool and a document describing its use etc).
There should be no reason why any Acronis application would stop you from playing music files or use Explorer, so if you are seeing such issues then it is doubtful that they are being caused by the Acronis applications.
- Log in to post comments

I tried your uninstall / reinstall, but it made no difference. Install stuck at ~ 90% for 7 hours. This was with the drive removed whose music files could not be played - it worked fine in my desktop
I then rebooted, uninstalled, rebooted, deactivated, rebooted and reinstalled my laptop from My Account download file run as admin.
The install has got further ~ 98% but is now stalled for 5 hours, so I will leave it overnight. If no good, is there any other way than applying the fill Cleanup tool and trying again.
Bear in mind that my other 2 devices are both not working either, despite installing OK, so what do I do with them as well?
- Log in to post comments

There has to be something else at play here as there is no way that any install of ATI should take more than a matter of minutes, and certainly not be taking 7 hours or more.
What are the common factors between the 3 devices that are no working here? I understand all your PC's are still running Windows 7, so assume this is SP1 and 64-bit?
Perhaps if you could create Acronis System Report zip files from a couple of the devices with problems and share that with me via a cloud service such as Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive etc (you can send in a private message if you prefer), that may give me a better chance of trying to see what is happeing here?

My laptop 2020 install reached ~99% then stopped. I had to end the process tree to exit, but it seems like 2020 has installed and when started, it brought up an Activate pane with Enter Serial Number and Account login buttons which had never happened before on any device install. When I logged into My Account, it seems like the activation happened without entering the license number.
I started a new backup which started without the previous .wav / .mp4 / .flac, etc errors. However again it is saving as .tib and no option for .tibx.
I will send System Report when the backup finishes

Tom, thanks for the system report zip file from your desktop PC.
This shows that ATI 2020 #25700 was installed successfully on 23/07 at 22:11 and from the installer log entries, only took a few minutes to do so!
The backup logs show logs for 3 different backup tasks of which only one task is still present in the Scripts folder and was created originally on ATI 2019 #17750, so even though is a disk backup task, will always continue using .tib backup files, not .tibx files.
Tasks: Samsung SSD 860 EVO 500GB and Default K were both created by ATI 2019.
Task: MyBackup was created by ATI 2020 but looks to have been deleted. This backup looks to have been going to a network destination (\\Ml310e\k\).
One factor that might make the initial launch of ATI to take longer on your desktop system is the number of installed disk drives along with mapped network locations, which ATI will try to scan for any existing backup .tib / .tibx files.
One other issue is shown in the msinfo32 report data under the heading Components > Problem Devices where it lists your G: I: J: and H: drive letters associated with what looks like a multi-function card reader device. This could also cause ATI to hang if it tries to access these drive letters!
