Making a clone of my startup 1tb drive to a 6tb drive

Thread solved

I want to make a clone of my startup (1tb drive to my larger, external 6tb drive) and not lose all the data that's on the target drive.

Can I change the destination drives partition size without losing what is already on there?

Or do I need to copy off what's on there, reformat the drive and partition it during that reformat?

Thanks

Don, welcome to these public User Forums.

Please see the link in my signature describing the difference between Backup and Cloning.

Please do NOT attempt to clone your 1TB drive to your external 6TB drive unless you want to lose all the data on that drive.  The first action of a clone operation is to wipe the target drive.

Backup is the answer here and will allow you to store multiple backups of your 1TB drive on your external 6TB drive.

Thank you Steve, your explanation, and the links answered my question. I used Acronis at my last job, but to a tape drive, and we rotated the tapes to keep weekly backups of our servers.

So this is a function of the program I am not used to and you answer and links provided me the correct way to do it. And the safe way.

Thanks,

Don
