Restore from unlisted place

I made some backups using the bootable DVD. Now I want to restore from one of those backups. I am trying to do the restore using the installed ATI but when I click on Restore it says there are no backups. How can I bowse to exactly the backup I want to restore?

Interesting, I didn't have my USB drives plugged in. After I plugged in the USB the top item with the green checkmark does allow a Restore. The others in the list don't exist anymore and they give a Browse option. But If I say ignore then they get deleted from the list. Now all I have in the list is the top item with the green check mark but I can't get a Browse option from that.

So my problem is that I do have other backups that do exist but they are not in the list.

So how do I browse now?

Point the Recover option to the drive letter where your backups are located.  This should then show all backup files on that drive.

I don't see a "Recover" option other than at the top of the screen which does not give a browse option. Are you saying to click on "Recover PC" in order to browse? I'm afraid that if I do that it will suddenly start to recover what is displayed but that is not what I want to recover.

If you are using the ATI GUI in Windows, then you need to use the option to 'Add existing backup' and use this to select your other, unlisted backup image files, which will then add an entry to the GUI and give you a Recover option.

Now I need to restore from an external drive to another external drive. But it seems that when I add a backup it only wants to restore to my PC hard drive. Is there a way?

Eddy, if you have both external drives connected, then you should be able to pick the correct restore destination in the Recovery steps as you go through them.

So I added the backup and clicked Recover and went through the steps but it doesn't give me a way to select the source. It just says "Your computer will be recovered to the selected point in time". If I select "Recover disks" it gives me a list of parts to recover but it doesn't give me a choice of where to recover to. What am I missing?

Could you send screen shots of what you see and what options you're selecting? I just did a full disk recovery this morning and it is just a matter of selecting an existing disk backup, selecting all partitions in that backup and then pointing it to the disk you want it recovered too.

I figured out how to select the source and destination.

So I'm just restoring all 4. But it looks like it is restoring to my PC and not to the external drive. I have attached a screen shot.

I went ahead and let it run and it did restore to the external drive. But the display is a bit scary because it looks like it is restoring to the PC.

Now the problem is that I told it to restore boot and C both to unallocated space but the remainder of unallocated space does not appear so I can't restore W. The amount of space to actually restore is only 61.9G + 192.7G + 509.9G = 764.5 so they should fit. It seems that it wants to restore the full partitions. Is there a way to just restore the used parts?

Regarding "it looks like it is restoring to my PC and not to the external drive" I did some experimenting and it is restoring to the other external drive (i.e., not my PC as is displayed on the screen ... a bit scary at first).

Here is how to restore from one external drive to another external drive (it is not obvious because Restore PC has an implication that it will restore to the internal drive).

0. Use Add Backup first and add the path where the backup is.
1. Select Recovery
2. Select Recover PC (don't worry, this will not recover to the internal drive)
3. You will get a message saying "The computer will be recovered ...". Again, don't panic.
4. Select "Recover disks"
5. Select Disks or Partitions at the top
6. It will go gray for a long time ... just hang loose
7. On the right under Recover To, click the dropdown
8. Select the drive (probably the one that says USB)
9. It will again go gray and spin ... it is not hung
10. Click Recover Now

If I remember correctly, in step 4 you can select something like "Recover partitions" and recover just selected partition.

That is correct.  Glad you got it sorted.  May not be all that intuitive I admit but it does work.
