Resume backup routine after Windows 10 reinstall

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I have just done a fresh install of Windows 10 and have reinstalled ATI 2019. I have imported my settings file and it has found my cloud backup. However when I went to resuem my weekly backup schedule it began backing up from fresh rather than incrementally. This is strange as the files it is backing up are exactly the same as before. This will be very frustrating if I need to do a fresh backup as it is over 200GB!

Is there a way to make the new install work without doing a complete new backup?

Thanks

I would assume that the backup would need to compare new data to old including position on disk of that data.  That will take some time and may result in a larger than expected backup.  How large I'm not sure.

Yes however the data is identical. The location on the disk is identical. The only difference is the data is stored on  a new hard drive. It is re uploading the entire 200GB.

I have just done a fresh install of Windows 10

Does your backup to the Cloud include the Windows OS?  If so, then that alone is a significant change regardless of the other data being unchanged.

No. It is my  C:\users file. It has done the same with my local external hard drive back up as in a completely fresh backup.

All file paths are identical.

So I am getting somewhere. I have logged into the online console and it is now showing two seperate desktop computers. I have renamed the new one the same as the old, but it is not making much difference.

Any ideas?

I think this may be because I have installed a different version of windows 10 maybe?

One of the issues with any version of Windows is that C:\Users\My_Name in one installation is not the same as / will never be the same as C:\Users\My_Name in another installation, even on the same computer if Windows is reinstalled.

This is most noticeable with User profiles / accounts where the files that were owned by the original owner are not automatically owned by the new owner regardless of having the identical name!

Ohh no. Well that explains it. No worry, thanks for all your help. I shall make a new backup and just delete the old ones manually after a few months.

Thanks again, very informative!
