The shadow copy provider had an error / related to Boxcryptor drive?
I am using Acronis True Image 2019. Cloud backups are fine, but when I use ATI to back up to my NAS I receive the following error message:
"The shadow copy provider had an error. Check the System and Application event logs for more information."
The System event log shows the following error:
"The shadow copy of volume X: could not lock down the location of the shadow copy storage on volume X:."
Note that volume X is a Boxcryptor virtual drive.
The ATI log file shows the following:
1/6/2019 4:09:44 PM: Pending operation 173 started: 'Creating partition image'.
1/6/2019 4:09:54 PM: Error 0x13c0014: VSS retry: 1
1/6/2019 4:11:06 PM: Error 0x13c0014: VSS retry: 2
etc.
1/6/2019 4:46:42 PM: Error 0x13c0014: VSS retry: 30
1/6/2019 4:48:14 PM: Error 0x101f6: Unable to create volume snapshot
1/6/2019 4:48:23 PM: Error 0x13c0005: Operation has completed with errors.
Acronis VSS Doctor shows the following NTFS Volume Access Control Configuration issue:
X:\ "SYSTEM" accout has no "Full Control" access
The Fix Issues option does not correct the issue.
Any suggestions for making my backup work locally?
Thanks!

Thanks for the quick reply. I should have noted that I have already added my Boxcryptor X drive (x:\*.*) to the exclusions list, and all of the above is with that exclusion in place. Is there more that I need to do? I do not need these folders backed up.

You have tried to disable VSS in the backup Options as well?
Is this a new issue that has arisen? Has the backup in question ever worked or not?
In many cases VSS issues can be fixed by simply restarting the computer, have you done that?

Yes, the backup is still failing even though I believe I have disabled VSS (by going to Options/Advanced/Image Creation Mode and selecting the "Back up sector by sector" checkbox).
The backups were running normally until mid-September, but I don't recall any changes that were made at that time, and Boxcryptor was already installed well before the issues occurred.

Selecting Backup sector by sector does not disable VSS, That setting tells the application to backup all sectors on disk. This includes all empty space on disk so creates larder than desired backup files.
Please see the screen shot below which show how to disable VSS.
If disabling VSS as shown gets the backups working then I recommend downloading and running the Acronis VSS Doctor tool on your system which can help you figure out why VSS is not working on your system.
Once you run the tool you can post your results here on the Forum for more help.
If you need help in using the VSS Doctor tool click on the Using VSS Doctor link in my signature link below.

Thanks for your help. The backup ran successfully with VSS disabled and using Acronis snapshot. As posted above, I ran Acronis VSS Doctor and got the following error in the NTFS Volume Access Control Configuration:
X:\ "SYSTEM" account has no "Full Control" access
Note that X is the Boxcryptor virtual drive, which I have added to ATI's exclusions list as: "x:\*.*"
Fix Issues does not correct the problem.
There are also a string of IO errors noted in the Event Log that may be related, such as:
Timestamp: 1/15/2019 10:38:20 PM
Type: Warning
Source: Disk
Message: The IO operation at logical block address 0x21 for Disk 1 (PDO name: \Device\000000a5) was retried.
InstanceId: -2147221351
What can I do next to troubleshoot this issue? I'd really like the backup using VSS. Thanks again for your help!

If Acronis snapshot works for you then I recommend using it. It uses a different VSS writer than the Microsoft Windows default. You should not see any performance issues in using the Acronis snapshot method.
