SSD Clone Won't Boot

Thread needs solution

HP Envy Desktop with Windows 10 Pro Cloned 1Tb HD to 1Tb SSD (SSD was connected via USB during cloning process). Cloning process appeared to complete normally. I then shut down the computer, removed the hd and replaced it with the SSD. On boot I get to repair screen (a required device isn't connected or can't be accessed). When I go into BIOS it sees the SSD and has it set as the first device. I've tried enabling / disabling UEFI / Legacy with no success. I know this question has been raised numerous times, but after reading the other threads I'm still lost. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Allan, the best recommendation I can offer is to use the Acronis Rescue Media when creating a clone of the OS drive, and install the new SSD in place of the old HDD so that when the clone is done there is no need to move the SSD location.

The clone should always be performed using the same BIOS boot mode as your OS uses, so if your Windows 10 OS uses UEFI to boot then this is also how the rescue media should be used to perform the clone.

Please see KB 56634: Acronis True Image: how to clone a disk - and follow the step by step guide given there.

See the following reference documents.

KB 59877: Acronis True Image: how to distinguish between UEFI and Legacy BIOS boot modes of Acronis Bootable Media

KB 61632: Acronis True Image 2019: how to create bootable media - for details of the 3 different types of rescue media.  Default Simple mode uses Windows Recovery Environment, then Advanced mode offers the older Linux media or Windows PE (using the Windows ADK).

I had the issue that when I cloned my old SSD onto my new SSD, the process completed successfully, but the new SSD would not successfully boot into Windows 10 - it would start showing the graphics for Windows 10, but would get stuck forever on the swirly graphic.

To make a long story short, https://kb.acronis.com/content/56634 held the missing step: after the PC shuts down on completion of the clone process, DISCONNECT THE OLD DRIVE! After I did this, the PC booted into Windows without a problem.

Now I have to find a way to connect and format my old SSD drive so I can use it for a scratch drive for Adobe programs.

Hope this helps somebody.
