SSD Failed!! Started the recovery process.

Thread needs solution

I'm sure we've all experienced a hard drive failure - it's horrible!

I had a Samsung 1Tb EVO SSD as my C: boot drive, it failed and I couldn't boot to Windows 10 Pro. I'd previously installed Acronis 2019 and followed the instructions to create a bootable USB drive.

So, here we go!

I purchased another Samsung 1Tb EVO SSD, installed in my PC and booted from the USB drive. I chose Recovery and selected the latest incremental TIB file dated 10th May 2019. The process started and I then ticked all the partitions available for restore.

The process started to check the partitions and after 10 minutes or so I'm presented with a message:
"Unable to lock the disk. Boot your computer from a Linux-based bootable media, and then try again".
I didn't anticipate this and losing a bit of confidence. at this early point.

So I have no option at this point other than clicking OK and starting again.

So, having clicked OK I was passed to SELECT DESTINATION OF DISK 2

Disk1 (the new SDD is greyed out and not selectable) this is the disk I wish to restore my system to! I didn't know it was required to be initialised prior to recovery! At this point, all I can do is Cancel the whole process!!

You can initialize the new disk in Acronis using the add new disk option. Restart Acronis rescue media, add new disk, select the new Evo (be sure you have the right one selected!!) And when it's done, then retry your recovery attempt.

Thanks for the advice Bobbo, I have now initialised the new EVO SSD and retried recovery, however, I keep getting the error:
"Unable to lock the disk. Boot your computer from a Linux-based bootable media, and then try again".
I believe that as a result, I'm now unable to select the EVO SSD as the destination despite it now showing as 'initialised'.

I have also created a new Universal Recovery USB boot drive, but the results are the same!

Ok, forget universal restore disk at all. Not needed here.

1) do you know if the system OS was UEFI/GPT or legacy/MBR? You want yo make sure you're booting your recovery drive to match for the restore. I'm assuming UEFI, let's make sure though as you can't go from uefi to legacy, but can go from legacy to UEFI

After that's sorted..

Reboot rescue media...

Close Acronis window...

Use command prompt and use diskpart to "clean" the new disk. This should wipe it out for sure.

List disk 

(Identify the correct disk #)

Select disk x (replace x with disk # identified)

(Say yes to continue but be sure you have the right disk!)

Clean

Convert gpt

Create partition primary

Format quick fs=ntfs

Assign

Exit

---------

Now, Reboot recue media, making sure it's uefi booted again

Now try to restore

To be honest, if I'd known I'd require great depth of computer tech knowledge to restore my PC I wouldn't have purchased the 6 licences.

I have to say thanks to those that assisted me, I'm grateful as for Acronis Trueimage - not impressed one bit!
