True Image 2019 backup targets

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I am looking for a bit of guidance and advice please.

I have a Synology NAS at home set up as a backup target for our computers, and all works fine.

My daughters have moved out and into their own homes now with their computers and their versions of ATI2019.

Now these will still back up when brought back home and connected to the network, but, I am wondering if I can set the backup target to be our NAS across the internet as a cloud target?

The NAS has a static IP & a domain attached, so is already accessible from the internet for Synology Drive, Photo etc. so they have access to the unit from their homes, it is just how to get ATI to send their computer backups to this remote Synology NAS I am stuck with.

Does anyone know if this is this possible please?

Thanks in advance.

Sidewinder, welcome to these public User Forums.

To be able to backup across the internet to your Synology NAS would require using FTP as the method / protocol, which in turn presents it own limitations and challenges.

Acronis do not support using Secure FTP for the TI family of applications, so you should also use the option for password encryption for your backup data traversing the open internet.  Encryption is only possible if selected when a backup task is first created and before it has created the first backup image.

You would also need to enable (insecure) FTP on your Synology NAS which then exposes it to potential attack from the Internet after you have opened a path to the NAS through your broadband router & firewall.

The alternative option would be to use VPN in order to extend your network to that of your daughters which should be much more secure and may allow use of either FTP or SMB for the connection.

I have never needed to take this approach for my own backups so cannot advise further about the details of doing any of the above.

You may also want to consider taking a subscription to the Acronis Cloud to share within your family, which wouldn't need any extra considerations as connections would be made directly from each of the computers running ATI 2019.

I've set up a VPN server on my router to give remote access to computers and drives on my LAN.  While testing the VPN connection from a laptop ATI initiated a backup to a NAS drive.  I didn't want that to happen but I can confirm that it works.

My ASUS router has the OpenVPN server and client built in.  The OpenVPN client for Windows is free, and implementation at both ends was relatively painless.

If your router does not support a VPN server you could install the OpenVPN server on Windows.  That should work without problem, but you would have to have that Windows server running whenever your daughter wanted to access anything on your LAN.
