Trying to boot from USB thumb dribe

Thread needs solution

I'm using the 2019 Beta but this also happens with the regular 2019. I have created a rescue media on a USB thumb drive. The creation went OK. But when I try to boot DELL does not recognize the thumb drive as bootable.

Does it boot on any system? Could be the bios settings if secure boot is enabled it might not allow external media to boot. How big is the flash drive? 32GB or smaller is recommended, especially if you have an OS that is not at least windows 10 1809.

Did you create Linux rescue media, WinRE or Winpe with the media builder? I would try WinRE first, as it should have all the same drivers added that are in the local OS. If the OS is win10 it should be able to boot on just about anything with WinRE.

Also, try a diskpart /clean on the flash drive. Then initialize as FAT32 and rebuild, just in case.

Yes, I would check the bios settings. I have not yet tried the 20920 Beta recovery media on my Dell notebook - something I will need to do when I get a chance.

ATI 2020 Beta USB boot media works fine on my Dell laptops.

It boots ok on my DELL e6440. I think the problem is as you suggest ... the secure boot. I'll turn that off and give it a try.

I talked to DELL. He had me change my BIOS setup to Secure Boot Off and Enable Legacy Boot Roms. He also told me that I have to have UEFI turned on under Boot Sequence (I thought it should be Legacy there). Now it is booting just fine on both computers.

Thanks for the update; glad it is sorted. The average user can easily be caught out by the secure boot settings.
