Trying to recover files from Acronis backup created on a different computer and a different user.

Thread needs solution

I am not a very experience computer guy and I am wondering if someone can help me please? Sorry for being dumb. Let me explain.

My old laptop failed completely and let out magic smoke. It is completely dead. I decided to buy another laptop.

I have a recent Acronis backup created with Acronis True Image 2019 available on my NAS and created from my old laptop. I would like to recover some files from the backup (for example outlook emails).

I have installed Acronis True Image 2019 on my new computer. Using the 'Add existing backup' feature I can access and open the backup image on my NAS and select the files I want to recover. I can select where I want to recover the data too, and I unticked 'recover files with their original security settings'. All good so far.

When I then attempt to recover the files it almost immediately fails giving a popup containing 'Recovery has completed with errors'. On the 'Activity' tab it says 'Access to the file is denied'. Confusingly it doesn't say which file cannot be accessed, the source file or the destination. I suspect it is the source file.

Having read some articles on the matter it seems the probable problem is that I am attempting to restore files from a backup created via a different account and there are some security settings preventing it working. What I couldn't find anywhere is how this situation is resolved. I guess changing some security settings, but where and what too. I am loathed to start messing with the security settings on the backup image, without knowing what I am doing, in case I bugger it up completely and render the backup image useless.

Can someone advise me how to proceed?

Thanking you in advance for your help in resolving this issue.

Cliff, welcome to these public User Forums.

What are the files that you are trying to restore and where are you trying to restore them to?

You should not be trying to recover files to any system folders where you will be replacing existing files.

The best suggestion is to recover the files to a spare hard drive or a user folder then do any further actions using normal copy & paste commands or use any options to import data for applications such as Outlook.

With recent versions of outlook you can only "import" *.pst files; any *.ost files (used for account set up for IMAP or Exchange Server) you cannot import the emails - you have to download them again from the email server. The *.pst architecture is only used for account using POP. There are programs that will allow you to either convert *.ost to *.pst or to export some of the content.

Steve, thank you for your comments.

I am just trying to recover office files, pictures, video that kind of stuff. All stuff that would go into 'documents' folder, nothing into system folders.

Yes, got it, recover to a user folder or spare hard drive and pick out files needed from there. Good idea, however currently I cant even recover a single file.

Ian, thank you for your comments.

Perhaps I confused with mentioning Outlook emails, lets ignore that issue for now and concentrate on getting any user file to recover.

Currently I'm just trying to recover one file, any file, it just happens to be a word document, I've tried different files, and it is going into a new folder in 'documents'. While I can select what I want to recover from the Acronis archive and tell it where to recover too, it quickly just tells me 'Recovery has completed with errors', but nothing is recovered. On the Acrons activity tab it says 'Access to File is denied'. Seems to me some kind of security issue, like using a different acount to recover with, than was used originally for the backup? But I don't know what to do to fix the issue.

Thanks again for your help.

Cliff, have you tried double-clicking on the backup .tib / .tibx file in Explorer to open it, after which you should be able to try using normal Copy & Paste commands for the documents.

See KB 61620: Acronis True Image 2019: how to restore files from a backup (Windows) for different methods of trying to recover your personal files from your available backup files.

Notes: you should be running from an Administrator account for best results, plus you may also need to have the Explorer View options set to 'Show hidden / system files'.

Steve,

Thanks for the suggestion Steve. Yes, I tried double clicking the backup .tib file which did mount the backup. However trying to explore the files in the backup produced security errors and wouldn't let me copy the files I wanted from the mount.

However, I raised a ticket with Acronis, who suggested using 'Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office' to recover files from my backup. About the only non standard thing they wanted me to do was to access my NAS only through its IP Address. I am happy to say that this solution worked for me and I was able to recover all of the data from the backup. I don't know why this solution works, but I am glad it does!

Thanks once again for your help.
