Unable to change destination of backups that point to a now defunct NAS

Thread solved

Hello,

I have a number of backups pointing to a destination folder on a NAS drive. Sadly, that particular NAS is no more and so I'd like to change the destination folder of the backup to a new destination (on a different NAS). Every attempt, though, is met by a request to authenticate to the now dead NAS. Without that authentication Acronis will not allow me to go any further.

Is there a way to change the destination without having to delete and recreate each and every backup?

Thank you for your thoughts.

Timothy, have you tried adding an entry to your local Hosts file to do a redirect of the old NAS name to you new NAS?

The hosts file is stored in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc and you would need to check the properties before trying to edit it as it is normally a read-only file.

The alternative would be see if you could assign the IP address from your old NAS to new one?

Hi Steve, and thanks for taking a crack at this.

It's never a good idea to have two host (host names) with the same IP address IMO. So, I think you're suggesting that I rename the new NAS with the old NAS name? Yes, I can do this and recreate the same directory structure and username to potentially 'fool' True Image. It's some work though, and a bit of the tail wagging the dog.

The issue, though, remains why we can't just change the destination directory? The old NAS has gone and now we want to point backups to the new NAS. Really, TI should just time out and allow the user make a change.

If there is no way to TI to 'let go' of the old NAS, how can I add this as a request for consideration to future updates?

Warmly

Tim

Tim, just to clarify a little here:  have you moved existing backup images from your old NAS to the new one, or are you just going for a clean start on the new NAS?

If the former, then take the option in the GUI to remove the settings for the backups going to the old NAS then use the option to 'Add existing backup' to select the most recent backup image file from the new NAS to bring back a task using that file name as the task name.  This would then need to be reconfigured but would achieve the same end result.

If the latter, then would suggest setting up new backup tasks for the new NAS destination.

In terms of your suggestion for a future feature consideration, then please use the Feedback tool in the ATI GUI, or else consider joining the ATI 2021 Beta test program where you can make such suggestions while the new version is still in final development.

Hello Timothy ,

in the current product implementation is really hard to change the settings if the target storage is not available. I've added this topic as a vote for the existing feature request  TI-170272 Allow changing the plan settings when the target location is not available. Thank you!

Hello Steve, the old NAS had a hardware failure and so I didn't get a chance to change the backup parameters in the GUI first. I do, however, have copies of the images that were created.

Thanks for the tips on adding this as a request, and for all the suggestions you've offerd. Very much appreciated!

Hello Ekaterina,

Thank you very much for adding my request as a 'vote for' topic, I really appreciate you doing so. How can I see these topics/requests and their progress, please? Are they viable on the web?

I'm afraid this is our internal tracking system, so the ID is more for the future reference. We can provide the status if requested and the most popular implemented requests are also published in the Release notes.

I understand, thank you Ekaterina. Yes, I'd like to know if this request is selected for implementation please.

Warm regards

Tim
