Unable to create bootable media 2019

Thread needs solution

I just attempted to create a USB stick bootable media with 2019 and it failed. Following are my steps

  1. Open ATI
  2. Click on the Tools Icon in the left nav pane
  3. Clicked "Rescue Media Builder"
  4. Clicked "Advanced" in the "Choose creation method" window
  5. Clicked "WinPE-based media"
  6. Clicked "Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10
  7. Added no drivers, clicked "Next"
  8. At this point I get dumb and don't remember the next steps. But what I do recall is that ATI stated it needed to format the NTFS (it was already NTFS formated) so I let ATI do its things. The next thing I noticed is that ATI failed. Now when I look at the USB stick it shows up as 14GB RAW.
  9. After a bit of research, I found a YouTube video that explained how to use DISKPART and I was able to clean the USB thumbdrive. But it did report an error thus I'm not sure.
  10. Using EaseUS Partition Master I attempted to format it with NTFS, it also encountered an error (There are some error occurred while writing partition chains on disk.)

I'm still researching for a solution.

Hi John,

First off, the bootable media must use the FAT32 file system.  Windows format does that by default on flash drive media of less than 32GB which is another requirement for the bootable media (32GB or smaller).

I would try again, use Diskpart to clean the  USB stick, while in Diskpart you can then format the disk as follows:

  1. Type the following command to clean the drive and press Enter:

    clean

  2. Type the following command to double-check the drive is still selected and press Enter:

    list disk

If the drive is still selected, you will notice an asterisk (*) next to the disk.

  3. Type the following command to create a partition and press Enter:

    create partition primary

  4. Type the following command to select the partition you just created and press Enter:

    select partition 1

  5. Type the following command to set the partition active and press Enter:

    active

  6. Type the following command to format the partition using FAT32 and press Enter:

    format FS=FAT32 quick

  7. After that finishes type Exit to end the Diskpart session.

Enchantech Much thanks for the feedback. I had no success with the DISKPART, it kept failing. After some additional research, I found an article suggesting that I use "EaseUS Partition Master" which I have. It also failed. I gave up on the USB thumb drive and used another one I have.

Dummy me did not realize that the bootable media had to be FAT32. On the 2nd USB stick I formatted it FAT32 and ran the Acronis Universal Restore and it reported success.

At this time I don't know if I will need to use it. The laptop that had super poor performance after the windows update. I ran the troubleshooter. It reported that the windows update DB was defective and I then opened a CMD as admin and ran the following two commands.

sfc /scannow
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

SFC did not find any problems but DISM did. I'm now about to install another Windows update.

OK I created the Acronis Universal Restore on a new 14 GB USB thumbdrive. I then booted off it on my main laptop (HP ENVY dv7). First I selected option 1 but could not determine how to access the backup on the shared internal drive in my desktop. I rebooted and selected option 2 but still, I cannot access the shared drive. Obviously, I've done something wrong. Any suggestions?

I then attempted to use a 240GB and a 1TB USB drives, both had Bitlocker applied when they were used on my HP laptop. I attached them to my old laptop (Lenovo Z580, Win10 Pro x64). The system reported that the drive had bitlocker but I could not find a method to apply the PW and use it. Since they are just testing drives I formatted the 1TB drive and started to copy the HP ATI backup files and noticed that the "full" backups were really different in size, one created on 07/26/2018 67GB, the other created on 09/13/2018 is 31GB. I opened both and I can see that the larger BU also included my "Data" partition whereas the smaller one did not. The copy is still running and will take several hours (10+ hours)

I killed the copy and moved the 1TB USB drive to my desktop where the copy finished in less than 4 minutes. Obviously, I have another issue on the Z580, I'll save this for another day.

OH darn the copy process encountered an "Error trimming the file". After a bit of research, I see that this is a problem with TeraCopy which I use. I recopied the file, this time with success. I tested and could open the file in the windows file manager.

Attached the USB drive to my HP laptop, selected the TIB in ATI, started the Recovery Wizard. Did the "Archive selection", "Recovery method", started "What to recover" and I seem to be hung on "Settings of Partition 1-1". No matter what I click on the PC just beeps.

I think my problem at this point is the alinement of the "What to recover" (e.g. the source) and the target. On the "What to recover" I selected "Disk 1" which selected everything. On the next screen, it seems that I have to match the various partitions but the order seems to be different.

OK I think I got it. It is a game of matching. The recovery is now running.

Holly Crap!!! This is totally different and confusing than the recovery method I used in the past which I have performed a number of times. Time for a break!

The restore was successful, as the system rebooted the windows update was applied and the system seems to be performing about the way as before. This is not to say it is at peak performance. Some applications seem to be running much slower.

One of the USB drives that I've been using for ATI testing (Bitlocker was not applied) now shows up as a 223GB RAW drive. In that, this drive was moved between three PCs I have no idea which system is responsible for messing it up.

OH Crap, I just rebooted my HP laptop and it took almost an hour. I will try a restore to the next earlier full BU.

John,

If your intent is to restore a backup file to your HP then the Universal Restore media you created is not the correct tool to use to do so.

True Image offers 2 different tools to perform recovery operations.  The primary tool is called Recovery Media.  This tool you use when restoring a backup created on a given machine back to that same machine.

A secondary tool is also supplied by the application which is called Universal Restore.  This tool you would use after using the Recovery Media tool to restore an image to a machine when certain hardware of that machine has changed (such as a motherboard but not a hard drive).  The Universal tool is used to resolve driver differences between old and new hardware.

Since it sounds like the latest MS update has not went well on this machine and others you have I would suggest that you use Windows Update itself to uninstall the most recent updates applied.  Further, after uninstalling the updates, I would at that point after a reboot of the machines, perform a new full disk backup of the machines.  Once you have that then you can attempt the Windows update again if you wish.  If they fail again at least you will have a known stable backup to restore if necessary.

I have found that these major Windows updates like this one are really upgrades and as such can and do cause problems on some machines.  I do not believe I have had the latest updates applied to my machines yet, I need to check, but I will say that the last one I got and applied to my laptops caused many of the same symptoms that you describe here.  What I found was that included with that update was an update to Windows Defender which proceeded to run a complete system scan immediately after the update was applied.  This scan took well over an hour to complete but once finished the machines settled down and worked normally thereafter.

Hope you get this sorted.

Enchantech - My original thought was to create an ATI tool that I could use in any situation, but now this seems to be a bad choice on my part. I do have the ATI Recovery Media on another flash drive and will use it and then recreate another flash drive with the same for my son. Thanks

I mentioned I was having problems with the Bitlocker drives on my desktop and my Z580 - This was because neither has the TPM Chip but there is a workaround which is a simple setting in windows, see https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-bitlocker-encryption-windows-10

I currently have two 2.5" hard drive external cases and a Toshiba 2.5 1TB drive in a third case. For the other two cases I have four drives, three of which are SSD. I've gone down another rabbit hole getting them to work on my desktop. I've had trouble copying the TIB files from my desktop to any of the 2.5" drives. I frequently encounter some error during the copy. For now I've given up on this rabbit hole.

If you have Active Protection on (the default) then it will stop you from copying an *.tib file. You have to suspend active protection to do the copying.

Ian

John, if you are wanting to copy your .tib files via a batch file, then you need the following approach if AAP is turned on:

@echo off
sc stop "AcronisActiveProtectionService" > NUL 2>&1
::copy the files
sc start "AcronisActiveProtectionService" > NUL 2>&1

Ian/Steve, much thanks for the feedback

I had turned off AAP or when using the copy app I approved when I got the ATI security window.

I rebooted my desktop (this is where the TIB files are stored). Attached a 2.5" 1TB drive and the copy worked without problems. I just opened Beyond Compare, within BC one window was the source and the other was the target. Selected the desired files and clicked on the Sync button and all of the files were copied without issue.

I'm now using the 2.5" drive with the TIB files on my wife's PC. She has only a wireless connection to our network and with the 42GB ATI file, the full BU was taking a very LONG time. We're in the process of putting the house on the market otherwise I'd run CAT 5 wire and make her connection a wired connection. In the new house, I plan to run CAT 6 and upgrade the hardware to 1000 mbs.
