Unable to Restore Backup

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I took an image of a failing hard drive, but I am unable to restore the image to a new drive. The image validates properly, but when I attempt to restore the operating system partition does not restore.

The manufacturer did send me a slightly smaller drive, but in the past True Image was able to just shrink the partition so that it fit to the drive.True Image 2019 is giving me a resize fit error, but the bootable recovery media was giving me an index corrupt error.

Any thoughts on what i can do to get this resolved?

Thanks

Adam, welcome to these User Forums.

You wrote: 'I took an image of a failing hard drive' - this is the key clue here, especially when trying to restore to a 'slightly smaller drive' as when ATI encounters a failing drive, it will normally switch to making the backup image using 'Sector-by-sector' mode and this means that the target drive for any recovery / restore must be of equal or larger size because ATI has to try to recover from the image using the same sector mode.

The log file for the backup may show the above if this was done using the Windows ATI application, but all log data is lost after restarting if using the ATI offline boot disc / rescue media.

So before I go through the effort, do you know if it would be possible to restore it to a larger "temporary" drive. Then reimage again and then restore to the smaller drive?

Adam, it should be possible to restore the image to a larger, temporary drive, then I would recommend running CHKDSK against all the restored partitions before making a new backup image of it to try restoring to the new smaller drive and doing an automatic resize of partitions.

Just as an FYI, this did work. I was able to restore the backup to a larger drive and run a check disk. After the check disk completed, I took another backup and was able to restore it to the smaller drive.

Adam, glad to hear all went well, thank you for the feedback.
