validation hangs on external USB HDD
ATI 2019 works perfectly on all my backup drives (internal and external) except a 2 year old WD My Passport Ultra 2TB drive. The backup occurs without any obvious fault, but when I try and validate it it often (not always) starts VERY slowly and then hangs up. This occurs using ATI 2019 on both my Windows 10 Desktop and my Windows 10 HP Notebook. Changing the USB cord makes no difference.
The validation is always attempted in a separate session. I find that trying to backup and validate in the same session (using any backup drive) often leads to very long processing times - or a hang up during the validation phase.
I did chkdsk /f /r and it took about 12 hours but only found a few bad clusters which were quarantined/repaired. After completion of the chkdsk, the validation hang still occurs sometimes.
Should I just give up on this external USB drive since it seems to be flaky, even though chkdsk finds nothing major is wrong. Or might the problem lie elsewhere? Would it be unwise to reformat the external USB drive and give it another life?
Thanks for any advice.
