ver 2017 Backup process doesn't continue to validation

Thread needs solution

Backup says operation completed successful but doesn't go to step 3 (validation?). There are no options in the menu to do an image validation, not from bootable media nor in Windows (Windows 11). I cannot tell if my images are validated. Please help.

Andrew, validation has always been offered as an option for both the Windows application and in rescue media, though for the latter it is not very obvious as to where to find it!

If your backup is being reported as completing successfully, then you need to look at the log to see if there were any issues encountered during the process or with regard to validation if this is enabled for the operation?

MVP Assistant Version 2.6.3 is available.

The MVP Assistant can help you to find and read the logs created by Windows.

For rescue media, the logs are offered as an option in the application GUI and have to be read while in that environment else are volatile and disappear when you reboot.

Validation does not guarantee that a backup file will result in a successful, working recovery!

What validation does do is to confirm that the backup file that was created by the backup operation has not been changed after it was written to the storage drive / location.  It does this by reading the backup TIB / TIBX file and calculating checksum values for each block of the file then comparing those checksums with values embedded within the file.  It the checksums match, then the file has not been changed since written.

What validation cannot do is to change whether any malware, virus or corruption was present in the source data for the backup operation when it was performed.  This can also include file system issues present when a backup was created but not detected or known about.

Andrew, did you specifically turn on Validation in the Windows version? It is set from the Options/Advanced/Validation. You can either request validation when the backup is created, or on a schedule. By default, there is no validation done.

If you want to manually validate a backup task, use the down arrow next to the task to open the pop-up menu where there should be a Validate choice.
