Walk through for using Acronis True Image for clean install

Thread needs solution

Hello, Sorry if this is a dumb question, can I get some advice on the best way to use my Acronis True Image backups to restore my documents and settings (currently using Windows 7) to a clean install of Windows 10? Thank you!

Seraphima, welcome to these public User Forums.

If you are upgrading from Windows 7 to a new clean install of Windows 10, then you need to be very careful what data you restore from any backup made from Windows 7.

Restoring documents should not be an issue but you should not be restoring any (settings) data that is held in system folders such as AppData unless you are 100% sure it is needed and will not cause either Windows or other applications to crash.

Ditto to Steve.  When switching to a new OS, restoring raw data (documents, pictures, pdfs, music files, movie files, etc) is no problem.

"Settings" is pretty broad.  You usually have to bite the bullet and set things up from scratch and go from there.  In some cases, you can restore parts of "appdata" like your Chrome contacts, settings, but it all depends on how the application works and installs (where it puts data, what registry keys it relies on, etc.).  Usually, a major OS transition is a new slate to start with though.  Get that configured and then start backing up and you'll have more options for recovery again after that.
