Why is cloud backup so slow?

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I'm not a computer expert but do have a general knowledge of how things work. I'm puzzled why a backup to the cloud is taking so long.

I'm backing up my main hard drive. It's a SSD 1TB. About 2/3 full.

The backup is now on day 5 which seems really excessive. I have (2) other 4TB drives that also need to back up and I'm terrified to see how long those will take.

Is there any way to speed this up?

Frank, welcome to these public User Forums.

First question to ask here is what is your internet connection upload speed?

Typically, most ISP's give a lower upload speed than they give for download, i.e. my own ISP gives me up to 100 Mbps download, but only 10 Mbps for upload.

You can check how long it might be expected to take to upload the volume of data involved at the upload speed available on the Upload time calculator website.

For example, if I put in an upload speed of 10 Mbps with a upload size of 700 GB, it gives me a time estimate of just under 7 days to complete!

Even with >1 gbps fiber optic connection (up and down) , nvme drives, no encryption, Marvell 10g NIC, hardwired cat 8 cabling, i9 10900k @ 5.3 all core the backup speed was pathetic. And acronis is by no means the only one. Apps or browser based, most of these services suck IME.
