Win 10 - Ver. 17750 Installation hangs during process

Thread needs solution

I have to say I'm very disappointed at this release. I purchase a license some time ago, I decided to give try on Windows 10 with the most recent updates installed.

Installation of True Image ver. 17750 gets to near the end and stays there for ever. There is no way to know what is preventing it from completing installation. When you close the installation window entire process is canceled. Where is a log?

I used Cleanup Utility and try installation two more times and the result is the same, installation hangs near the end.

Knowledge Base articles are useless in this case, because there is no way knowing what went wrong. Disabling Windows Defender did not help.

Any solutions or ideas?

Peter, please see KB 46710: Acronis True Image: Installation Fails in Windows - which covers a wide range of known install issues.

For what it's worth... in most cases, the install issue is two-fold:

1) The cleanup should be launched with full admin privileges.

Don't just double click to launch.  First, open a command-prompt with right-click and "run as administrator" even if already logged in as admin.  This ensures elevated access that are not fully granted just by double clicking an installer or application.  Navigate to the cleanup tool in command prompt (just enter the full path to the .exe) and press enter.  When done, REBOOT to update the registry.

2) Clean out any TEMP files in the profile that is running the installer

After the reboot from step 1, log back in with the admin account and navigate to %temp% (ensure you navigate to the same account as the install is going to be run from... which again, the installer should be run with right-click and "run as administrator" for highest access.  The goal here is to remove any files in the TEMP directory that may still be there - could be a bad extraction of the installer files and this is usually what gets people with failed installs.

3) Also, make sure you are downloading the full installer from your Acronis account of the latest version - I find this works nearly flawlessly, vs using the in-app upgrade if you are prompted that a new version is available when running the Acronis Application.  If you see that notification, close the app and go get the full installer from Acronis and install that instead.  Once downloaded, make sure to right-click and "run as administrator" on the installer .exe (even if logged in with an admin account already).

Hopefully installs goes fine now.

Where is a log?

Peter, the easiest way to find the log is to use the MVP Log Viewer tool. If you don't already have it, use the link at the bottom of Bobbo's or Steve's posts. In the viewer, set the Log Type to "Installer". Alternatively, go to
C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Logs
and look for the most recent log of the form
installerui-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx.log
where each "x" is a hex digit.

I'm not sure if the log is of much use to anyone other than Acronis support, but seeing the last few entries in the log might be interesting. (Of course, if the logger is hung up along with the rest of the install process, the most interesting entries might be those that never got written.)

@Bobbo_3C0X1

It did not work. I followed your instructions and installer stopped exactly at the same point.

@Patrick O'Keefe

I will look for it. Although, once I close the installer window, installation process is canceled and some clean up process is initiated. So, I wonder if the log your described still exists.

Peter, have you reviewed KB 46710: Acronis True Image: Installation Fails in Windows - that I posted earlier which has the following section at the end of the document.

MSI log

Creating an MS Installer Log of Acronis Software.

Alternatively check that installation log is included in the system report collected by the AcronisInfo Utility in the previous step.

System report

Collect information with AcronisInfo Utility.

If needed, attached the system report using the File upload option to the forum and we will take a look to see if we can see any reason for the issue?

@Steve Smith

This is a long article. I looked at quickly and nothing really resembles the issue I have.

Installation does not fail per se. It simply stops at some point. The window described in

56655: Acronis True Image 2016-2019: Creating an MS Installer Log

is not available, so there is no way of getting a log.

Maybe AcronisInfo Utility will be more helpful.

I have the same problem as Peter. It just hangs. Says nothing. I have to say I have used Acronis for a good 15 years and with each new release seems to come a new problem. I'm pretty disgusted.

William, welcome to these public User Forums.

Sorry but more information is needed before we can try to assist here?

Are you upgrading from an older version of ATI, if so, what older version?

Have you tried uninstalling all Acronis software and using the Acronis Cleanup Tool (link below)?

Have you looked at KB 46710: Acronis True Image: Installation Fails in Windows - for common issues.

Thanks Steve - I will try the cleanup utility. This all started when Acronis 2020 on opening informed me that a newer version was available. It would just hang near the end of the install just as the previous poster mentioned. Then I tried deleting 2020 and downloading a whole 2020 executable. Again, it just hangs.

I would have been better off just turning off the notice and staying with my version of 2020.

I'll let you know how this works but I have to say as I had mentioned in my original post - every version of Acronis seems to have a major bug.

The worst one was with 2015 or 16 - my HDD failed and I learned with the bootable CD I made that it couldn't find any of my backups on my external drives. I come to learn that this was a known issue.

Fortunately at the time I had a dual boot system with Fedora Linux on the other disk and it was able to save most of the files on the bad HDD.

But it always seems to be something.

Thanks for your response - I will let you know.

Well Steve, even the Acronis cleanup utility wouldn't work. I'd click on it and nothing happened.

It was as the previous poster said, you would try to install a newer version it would get almost to the end and just hang. No explanation given.

Fortunately I backup regularly and restored a backup from 3 days ago, complete with TrueImage 2020. Did a complete system restore. I think for the time being I will turn off the search for newer versions and just use this.

Thank you for the offer to help but it seems that with virtually every version of Acronis that I have had - something like this happens.
