2020 restore question

Thread needs solution

I'm attempting to restore my win 10 x64 desktop. Initially I tried using the acronis universal restore. I could boot from the thumb drive but was not able to setup the restore. There was no option to restore.

I found my acronis restore thumb Drive, booted, selected to restore the entire drive. Acronis started to lock the partitions but failed when it attempted to lock "F" ang suggested using Linux.

I found my Acronis Linux thumb Drive, booted, selected the source, then selected the destination (Samsung SSD 850) Now I see msg "Warning! After operation completion, operating systems will not boot from the destination disk in BIOS."

Sorry to be a dumb user but what the heck does this mean? I get the feeling I'm screwed.

John, the latter error / warning is simply caused because you have a UEFI boot system and you have booted your Linux thumb drive media in Legacy boot mode, which would migrate the disk from UEFI / GPT to being Legacy / MBR, which would then become unbootable!

If you are restoring a backup to the same PC that it was created from, then you should not be trying to use Acronis Universal Restore as this is only needed when restoring to different hardware i.e. a new PC, new motherboard etc.

The failed to lock the drive message is commonly caused because Windows holds a lock on the drive by virtue of being shutdown into a hybrid sleep state (akin to being in hibernation).

I would suggest ensuring that you have done a full shutdown by pressing / holding a shift key while clicking on 'Shutdown', or else to go into the Windows 10 Settings panel, then into Update & Security, then Recovery followed by selecting 'Advanced start-up' and selecting your Acronis rescue media thumb drive to use as the next boot device.

This should force a full shutdown & restart into the boot media application.

If you still see any message about a locked drive or partition, then use the Tools > Add new disk option in the offline Acronis application and reinitialise your target disk drive for your Recovery as GPT and leave it as unallocated drive space (with no partitions) and try again.
