Acronis True Image 2020 Build 25700 - Huge Backups

Thread needs solution

Not sure if there is a solution here, but I am doing a weekly incremental backup of the main partition which is 321GB but only using about 110GB.  Backup destination is a 1TB drive.  Backup creates a full version after every 5 incremental and deletes version chains older than 183 days.

The backup drive is already full with 3 versions beginning 4/6/2020.  Until Acronis True image, I haven't seen a backup program that eats up nearly 10 times the drive space within almost a couple months.  Is this basically how this backup program works?

Dan, welcome to these public User Forums.

I would suggest that the issue here is a misunderstanding around the automatic cleanup option being used to 'delete version chains older than 183 days'.

Users tend to think that the 183 days start counting from the date that files are created which is not correct.

The age only starts counting after a new chain has been started by the successfull creation of a new Full backup image which then signals day 0 of the count.

I find it much easier to understand and manage the alternative automatic cleanup method to 'Store no more than X recent version chains' where the same principle applies, but the oldest chain of files is deleted immediately after the X+1 new chain is started by a successfull new Full backup file.

Using that second method makes it much easier to calculate how many chains you can store on your 1TB drive using the calculation of X+1 full backup files, and X x 5 incremental files as the size that needs to be stored before any cleanup is run.
