Acronis True Image forgets about partition to backup - LAME BUG

Thread needs solution

Please see the video. After it was shot I kinda worked out what might be triggering this bug.

I have an APFS partition and Acronis doesn't even know that the partition exists. So I tried a sector by sector backup job instead - exactly the same issue.

This is an absolute joke. It should at least show the partition even if it does not recognise the filing system (which is crazy anyway as this mainstream Mac format has been around for over two years). I should also be able to do sector by sector to get around this... but nope.

Alex, what product are you using here and on what computer OS?

Is this ATI 2020 for Mac on a Mac OS system, or is it the Windows app on a Windows system?

I only have Windows systems and the ATI 2020 for Windows app and cannot recreate the issue but also do not have any non-Windows filesystems on the computer either, so the test was to pick a partition from a USB drive.

Alex.

Have you actually ran these backup task configurations and created a backup file with them prior to switching from one task to another?  If you configure a task then exit that task and create another the first task will revert to default values.  You need to run the task after the configuration so the application will save the setting of that task in the backup scripts database.

Sorry for the delay in response...

I noticed this bug several days after I ran the initial backup job. I also don't expect my selections to change just because I moved from backup job to another without running it, if that's the case it should prompt me saying my selections will be forgotten, although how on earth that would be desirable behaviour I don't know. Regardless running the backup job doesn't make any difference to making the setting persistent...

Here is the layout of my disk:

 nvme0n1            931.5G
├─nvme0n1p1 vfat     954M      /boot/efi
├─nvme0n1p2 swap     5.9G    Linux Swap
├─nvme0n1p3 ext4   146.6G /  Ubuntu Linux
├─nvme0n1p4 apfs   146.5G    Hackintosh Catalina
├─nvme0n1p5 ntfs   371.1G     Windows 10 (running True image 2020 here as per video).
├─nvme0n1p6 ntfs   167.5G     Windows 10
└─nvme0n1p7           16M        Microsoft Reserved partition
and 93.14Gb of unallocated space at the end.

Thanks.

Alex,

I do not have a Mac.  Given your partition layout I see that you have True Image installed on the Windows partition.  This would suggest that Windows system requirements would be enforced.

If you installed the MAC version on one of your MAC installs then MAC system requirements would be enforced.  That suggests that your desired outcome here could be achieved by using the MAC version of the product.

I say this as the commons between these different version are in the file systems, they are:

Mac version

1.3

System requirements

Supported operating systems:

  • mac OS Catalina 10.15
  • mac OS Mojave 10.14
  • mac OS High Sierra 10.13
  • mac OS Sierra 10.12
  • OS X El Capitan 10.11

Supported file systems:

  • APFS
  • HFS+ (including Core Storage)
  • FAT32
  • NTFS (including Boot Camp)

You cannot back up data to a disk with an NTFS file system. However, you can recover data from a backup located on this type of file system

Windows version

1.4.3 Supported file systems

  • NTFS
  • Ext2/Ext3/Ext4
  • ReiserFS(3) *
  • Linux SWAP *
  • HFS+*/HFSX*
  • FAT16/32/exFAT * **

* File systems are supported only for disk or partition backup/recovery operations.

** File systems are supported only for disk or partition recovery operations (without resizing). If a file system is not supported or is corrupted, Acronis True Image 2020 can copy data using a sector-by-sector approach.

As you can see the MAC versions supports the file systems that the Windows version does not.  Exception is vfat which because it is an old extension of FAT I would think that both version could handle even though it is not officially supported by either.

It's still a bug. Yes it's not supported but this is not good or expected behaviour with an unsupported partition whereby it's invisible and the tickboxes become unticked (see video).

Regardless sector by sector copy should work and.it doesn't, and at the very least it should see the partition even if it won't clone it, ideally with a message stating it can't be cloned.

Regardless it's very disappointing it isn't supported.

Alex, I believe that your multiboot system environment with Ubuntu, Mac Catalina and Windows 10 is covered by the following KB document.

KB 62562: Acronis True Image: unsupported CPU and operating systems

This is not so much a code defect aka a bug, but rather the limitation of the software to do what you are asking of it in this multi OS environment with the mix of different file systems.

ATI is intended for use in single OS environments for the most part, with the exception of running Windows within Bootcamp under Mac OS.  Support for non-native filesystems is provided as far as is reasonable but would require using both the Windows and Mac versions of ATI in your particular mix environment.

If you are not happy with how this is, then you need to address this to Acronis by opening a support case directly with them, as this is not something we can help resolve in these user forums.

Again if the partition filing system is not supported the partition should at least be displayed as not recognised and I should be unable to select it for backup.

It should not be invisible to the user and itself, and then forget that other partitions have been selected because it's getting itself muddled over a phantom partition it can't see.

This is absolutely a clear bug.

And sector by sector backup should work regardless but that's a side comment.

Alex, sorry but we can never fix this issue for you here in the forums.  If you want to report this to Acronis as a suspected code issue then you need to open a Support Case direct with them and then work with Acronis Support on describing the issue in a way that will allow them to decide whether they agree that it is a defect or else is working as per their current design specs.

I will do, in the meantime I'm looking for alternative software, maybe run it on Linux. I run into one issue after the other it seems.

Bring back to the good old days of Ghost ! The worst that could happen was that the mouse didn't work or you couldn't find the network card driver.

Clonezilla works well for Linux but is a boot solution rather than live backup, at least has been when I have used it!  Ghost was good but that is going back a long, long way now!
