Active Cloning

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I believe I have initiated an active cloning process (there's no request to reboot) via Windows. It would seem that the source disk is still accessible in Windows but the target disk is locked and hidden away.

Is this correct? I don't understand why I am still able to modify the contents in the drive that is being cloned. Wouldn't that mean that all changes made during the cloning process will not be reflected at all in the cloned drive?

Am I understanding things wrong?

Thanks!

Joshua, welcome to these public User Forums.

The purpose of cloning is to duplicate the source disk drive to a target drive that would normally be expected to be used to replace the source drive.  The target drive is hidden after cloning completes because it should be removed from the system to avoid disk signature clashes by having 2 drives with the same signature, plus should not be modified.

Active Clone captures a snapshot of the data on the Source drive, in the same way that is done when making a disk backup from within an active Windows desktop, using the Microsoft VSS snapshot service, so yes, it is correct that you can continue using the PC while either of these activities are being performed and only the data present when the snapshot was captured in used, not any changes made after that point.

If you want both the source disk and target disk to be 100% identical as far as possible, then use the Acronis Rescue media to boot the PC and perform the clone operation.
