ATI 2020 backup creates 142 .tib files, then cannot locate them

Thread solved

I have ATI 2020 Build 25700 backing up to a NAS.  Because I use Backblaze to backup my NAS, and it does not work well with large files, I use backup splitting to keep the parts below 5GB.  So my full backup is large, 142 .tib files.

My problem is that ATI is not cleaning up old backups and when it completes successfully, it seems to lose track of the current one!

There were at least 5 chains in the directory, and they all seem to be full backups (there should have been incrementals):

    bugs_files_full_b89_s1_v142.tib
    ...
    bugs_files_full_b89_s1_v1.tib
    bugs_files_full_b88_s1_v143.tib
    bugs_files_full_b88_s1_v1.tib
    ...

So I manually ran a backup, it took 3 hours and created 142 .tib files

    bugs_files_full_b90_s1_v142.tib

and then Acronis starting prompting me with a dialog box about versions missing *in the current chain*.  I rebooted and started up ATI and hit the Recovery tab.  More complaints about files in very old chains not existing.

I Manually started the job again and I got a dialog complaining about "file does not exist" but *it does not name a file*.

Now the job is running and *it is doing another full backup* but this time the chain number is 1.

    bugs_files_full_b1_s1_v1.tib

I am really very frustrated by ATI at this moment.

Ken, welcome to these public User Forums.

Sorry but more information would be needed to try to understand what is happening here?

If you are using a split value of 5GB for your backup task, then this will result in a large number of _vnnn files according to the size of the data being captured, so having _v1 to _v142 is to be expected.

If you have been manually cleaning up unwanted files from the NAS outside of using the tools provided by ATI using such as the 'Clean up versions' tool or else using 'automatic cleanup' then this will cause other issues that can cause the task to be reset or missing versions errors to be given.

If you have Backblaze running on the ATI backup files on the NAS when ATI is also trying to manage those files, that can cause issues too due to encountering locks on files that are unexpected.

All the above is guessing at this point without seeing any log files for the task and understanding what actions have been performed, i.e. have the task settings been changed since the task was created, split value changed, cleanup rules, incremental files count etc?

Hi Steve and thanks for the response.

My main issue is that the ATI GUI is out of sync with the backups it created on the NAS, so there are a couple full backups that aren't visible in either "cleanup backup versions" or "recovery".  But if I remove them manually, ATI complains and will prompt me individually for ignoring each of the 143 backup files.

Where are these log files?

Here are 4 images

1 - I see 2 backups in recovery

2 - I see 2 backups in cleanup

3 - I see 4 FULL backups in directory

4 - ATI has lost track of chains 89 and 90

Ken, thanks for the screen images.

There are a couple of options you could try here to resolve the issues with missing version chains in the ATI GUI.

Use the 'Add existing backup' option and select the most recent file for each chain which should bring it back into the GUI and show it in the Recovery panel drop down listing.

Force a rebuild of the internal Acronis database to remove all references to old / missing files using the steps given in KB 60915: Acronis True Image: repairing program settings

All the log files can be found from C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Logs but as you are still using backups created before ATI 2020 with .tib files, you can also use the MVP Log Viewer tool to view the logs more easily. (Link in my signature)
Note: the log viewer doesn't handle the new backup_worker logs used for .tibx backups but your images do not show you having such files.

> Force a rebuild of the internal Acronis database

Did this and lost all knowledge of all backup chains for all jobs.  Restarting ATI did not rebuild the database, it created an empty one.  Reverted.

> Use the 'Add existing backup' option and select the most recent file for each chain

Winner!  I added the one that appeared complete and now all 3 full chains were in the history.  Ran a scheduled backup and it correctly created an incremental and cleared out the expired chain.

Thank you for your assistance!

Glad the suggestion helped Ken, thanks for the feedback.
