ATI 2020 Problem #1 Replication never ends

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I have been Acronis user for a very very long time, and happy with it. For the last 3 years I kept subscribing to ATI and ATI cloud though more and more reluctanctly due to very poor performance (this will be another subject).

1st Problem (W10 up to date):

I do a partition (D:) full backup to another partition (H:) this backup beging replicated to Acronis Cloud.

The replication process never ends ("less than one minute left" message for hours). Pausing replication and restarting does the same. Rebooting too.

Thanks for help.

I have no inside knowledge into this, but it appears that, for some backups, ATI does most of its processing while displaying "less than one minute".  It has no idea how to estimate the time so it just doesn't try.  I've had a large backup display "less than a minute" for hours.

Backing up to the cloud can be a very slow process - sometime days or even weeks.  (I don't use it because of this.  Even if the backup time is acceptable, recovery time would not be.)  If you replicating a very large backup that replication is going to take a long time.

I have used replication without significant issues since beta testing ATI 2020. I would not recommend it if you have a slow internet connection. Fortunately I have a relative fast cable internet service (normally about 95/35 Mbps) which is adequate for replication. Most ISPs provide asynchronous connection speeds, with downloads being much faster.  Two or three years back I did recovery of the system partition on my HP Windows Tablet and it was relatively fast (I then had a 100/2 Mbps connection). I suspect that only data segments that are different are downloaded given the speed.

Thanks,

I just have a 'normal' dsl connection over a telephone line. Other backups (no replication) to Acronis cloud do end. "Less than one minute" has now been displayed for 12 hours (yesterday), I shall wait.

Looking at network stats, I see 3 sockets connected to and from acronis cloud and active.

Jacques, put your upload speed and the size of your full backup file into the Upload time calculator website and see what it suggests might be the time needed to upload the file to the Acronis Cloud.

Thanks Steve, I know it is several days. So, problem is just "do not look at ATI's times or file sizes " ?

The real issue for me with replication is that any interruption to the initial full backup upload to the cloud will result in a complete restart from the beginning again (and again....), which essentially makes this feature a non-starter for me with a max 10Mbps upload speed.

I did try replication for a short time during the beta testing phase of ATI 2020 but found it was running for days then restarting over until I decided to kill it.

I find making a separate backup to the Cloud to be a better service.  You still have to do the same initial full upload for a new backup task, but the backup is able to restart if interrupted and then only does a hybrid incremental then after for the changes identified and versioning is available to be used for retention by versions and age.

Thanks Steve, maybe you are right !

Replication seems to have restarted (or continued ?), claiming 1,1 GB (1,6 Mb/s and even 3,3 Mb/s) and decreasing time left of 3:15 hours.

Why did I try to use replication ?

  • just because replication does not block other backups ! Doing a cloud backup lasting several days blocks all other backups meanwhile (cloud or not).
  • because I used to have many relatively small backups and Acronis would not cope with them. Acronis told me to use 1 big backup per partition. I also want to have at least one external backup (Acronis cloud so), so local or share backup is not sufficient.

I now use another backup software (not perfect though !) but wanted to give ATI another chance.

Furthermore Acronis slows down PC so as it is sometimes impossible to use it : mouse does not move, keyboard hardly responds. Removing Acronis solve the problem. For file/directory selection in ATI : same thing with long directories (each release is slower than the one before).

My subscription ends in november '20, maybe I shall perform some tests one day. Maybe Acronis addresses companies with high performance network, PC's and servers.

Perhaps I have been very luckly / fortunate but I have not seen that type of performance impact when using ATI.  It is possible that Acronis Active Protection could give such negative issues if it is conflicting with other installed security applications or is actively monitoring other applications on the computer.

I run a mix of computers with ATI 2018, 2019 & 2020, all with AAP enabled and no obvious impact that I am aware of (other than needing to turn off AAP for some actions around .tib / .tibx files).  My main computer is a modern i7 8th gen gaming laptop, but the others are much older and mostly just dual-core / core 2 duo systems (from eBay!) used for testing etc.

This is not typical ATI behavior.  I have not seen ATI slow down mouse and keyboard interaction.  This is on 4 computers with quite different hardware an installed software, and (for 3 of the computers) across many releases of ATI.  I suspect ATI is interacting with something else - hardware or software - on your computer.  Unfortunately, I don't see any easy way to diagnosis that bad interaction.

Is this behavior happening on more than one computer?  If not, perhaps doing a repair install of ATI would be worth a try.

I'm not sure what you are saying here.  I have seen very slow display of directory listing when opening a backup file in File Explorer but not, for example, displaying a directory in the ATI GUI (when picking files or folders to be included in a backup, for example).  And I haven't noticed it getting worse across releases of ATI.

Displaying available backups in an ATI recovery sometimes takes a long time, but I've always assumed I was doing something wrong in the selection process.

The mouse issue may be related to a faulty Windows 10 update that was released a few weeks back. After a while one of my PCs became completely unresponsive, and I had to do a hard power down.

I am on the road at the moment using my iPad so it is not possible for me to find the link where it is discussed.
