Back up speed variable

Thread needs solution

Previous posts have produced very helpful comment and advice so here goes again. I use the differential backup scheme daily at a scheduled time when I am tucked up in bed! I have noticed that the data speed varies from as low as 4 Mbs/sec to as high as 250 Mbs/Sec. with a corresponding time difference. The backup size is roughly the same each night and the drives etc remain unchanged. Any ideas what is causing this huge variation?

Frazer, sorry but very difficult to guess as to why your backup gives different speeds here?

What is your source data here?  If it is the OS drive, then even though this doesn't appear to change in size, there are constant changes in the data just by Windows being open etc.

I have a daily differential backup of my OS drive that shows the fastest speed for any Full backup but much slower speeds for the daily differentials because there is much more processing needed by ATI to determine the changes since the last Full was run.

The image below shows these differences where the source is a NVMe M.2 128GB SSD writing to a 1TB SATA HDD (internal).  The Time spent is of more interest to me rather than the Speed.
