Backup can't clean old versions

Thread needs solution

Acronis True Image 2020. Local backup to an attached USB hard drive. Set up for incremental backups. Automatic cleaning is turned on now, although it wasn't turned on until lately, don't delete oldest is also turned on, but cleaning isn't happening. Backup drive is full. I tried manually cleaning old versions, it won't work. "can't delete some files"--and no files are deleted. I've tried over and over. I started a support ticket, they told me to turn off "Active Protection". I did, it still didn't work. I told them so, twice, and have received no answer.

What else can I try? And how can I prevent this from happening in the future?

Thank you!

Seraphima, after turning off Acronis Active Protection, you will need to manually delete the older Acronis backup files from your full backup storage drive, but as you have ATI 2020 you can do this from within the ATI GUI using the 'Clean up versions' tool, which will ensure that you are deleting the correct files.

To get to the 'Clean up versions' tool, select your backup task in the ATI 2020 GUI, then click on the caret 'v' to the right of the task name which will show a drop-down menu with this option.

Thank you, Steve, but I've done that--or tried that--multiple times, more times than I can count. It always says "unable to delete all files" and when I close it, it hasn't deleted any. I've tried deleting them one at a time, with the same result. I've tried leaving the oldest one unchecked for cleaning. I think I've tried everything I can think of.

Is the only thing left to format that drive in Windows and start over? That's not a solution I like at all. I may set up an alternate program on another drive for now.

That is very strange that you cannot delete the files using the Clean up versions tool - can you post some screen shots of exactly what you are selecting when using it?

The other option, if you have another computer without ATI installed, is to take the backup drive to that other PC and delete the files from there, which will tell you if the issue is with ATI locking the files or with the drive etc?

Here's a long shot idea for you.  Have a look at your Recycle Bin and see if it contains a large amount of deleted files.  If it does, empty the Recycle Bin and then see if you can run cleanup on the backup task.

Thank you Enchantek - that was it! I ran the system clean up in ATI, especially the recycle bin. Then I cleaned the old versions, and the backup is running right now--phew!

I will remember this for the future!

Thank you Steve as well!

Glad to hear that worked and thank you for reporting back.  :)
