Backup to NAS Takes > 8 hours

Thread needs solution

Config:

  • ATI 2020 build 38530
  • Surface-3, 64 bit WIn10, SSD 231 Gig
  • Full backup of disk image
  • Target vault: Synology DS218+ NAS; 2x mirrored Seagate IronWolf 6TB

In the past, for some reason, ATI would never recognize my NAS as the backup target so I used the network UNC instead. Recently, ATI began recognizing the NAS, perhaps due to some recent Synology updates.

As a result, I reconfigured my backup targets to use the NAS, however, my first backup started at 1:30 am today and was only 20% complete at 8am.

Am I missing something in my config?

Thanks

How is the Surface-3 connecting to you Network. My recollection is that Surface PCs usually do not have an Ethernet port; if that  is correct do you have a docking station with an Ethernet port, or are you connecting to the network by wifi?

I have a DS-414, and when backing up over wired network a 500GB NVMe SSD, with about 200GB of "data" it takes about 1 hour. My NAS has dual Ethernet ports but a far less powerful CPU, and it using Raid 5 rather than mirroring.

Look in Task Manager at your Network speed while run the backup task.  This measurement will either be Mbps or Kbps.  If Kbps then backup of even a minimal install of Windows will take a long time.  If Mbps and the numbers are below 100Mbps this too will take a long time.

WjFi is not the best option for backup of data due to performance limitations.

I'm using ATI 2020 Build 38530 and backing up to a DS918+.  My C drive isn't partitioned, and I'm backing up about 345GB with my full backups.  My PC is connected via Ethernet to one of my eero mesh network units, and the full backups take between 2 1/2 and 3 hours.  When I used WiFi for the full backups, it took 5 hours or more.  From what I've read on the 2020 and 2021 ATI forums my times are about average.

I'm thinking about changing my backup strategy to something similar to what Enchantech uses.  Backup the data (Documents, Downloads, etc.) daily, and only do full backups after a Windows update or maybe every other week.
