Backups are supposedly corrupt(?!...)

Thread solved

I have been using TIB (now 2020) for a long time. I have separate weekly backups of my Windows/boot drive as well as my data drive. After each backup, I have it set to validate the backup. I know all the backups I have are valid since I get an email confirming when it completes. The most recent backup was last Friday.

The backup scheme I use is full followed by differential.

This morning, my computer blue screened with the error "UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME"  That's a scary thing to see but I figured I'd roll my Windows/boot drive back to last week's backup. So I ran TIB from the CD (and also tried the flashdrive I'd made) and tried to recover but got this:

But not only does it claim that my most recent backup is corrupt, it claims that all my backups are bad - not only the most recent differentials, but even the initial full backup. And not only this backup series, but even the previous one, too. The backups are saved to a third internal HDD that is only used for saving backups. I never use or access it otherwise. I have a very hard time believing they were all actually corrupted.

This is scary. Please advise if there's any way for me to recover my computer from a backup.

Eliezer, some questions to ask here...

What format is being used for your OS disk backups?

ATI 2020 now uses .tibx files for all new disk backups but can still continue backup tasks created by ATI 2019 and earlier versions which used .tib files.  This is important because if you attempt to open a tibx file with ATI 2019 or earlier, it will be reported as being corrupt!  If you attempt to change a tibx file and use the .tib extension, it will also be reported as being corrupt even by ATI 2020.

The key points being made here is that you need to be using the latest version of Acronis Rescue Media, i.e. created by ATI 2020 which should work with backups created by most previous versions of ATI, and all file extensions much be left as they were created by ATI.

Thank you, Steve, for your timely and helpful reply! (As always!)

The backup files have the .TIB extension. The rescue media with which I attempted recovery were in fact created by an earlier version of ATI, likely 7 years ago.

So all I need to do is download the most recent bootable media from here:
https://dl.acronis.com/s/AcronisTrueImage2020_38530.iso
then restore from it?

Is there a way for me to download and run the bootable media from a flashdrive?

If you have another PC with ATI 2020 installed, then you could create USB media directly on that PC, otherwise, if you download the .ISO file, you will need to use a tool such as Rufus to convert the ISO to create a bootable USB drive.

OK, thanks.

But the type of media aside...

So it sounds like downloading that version of the bootable media should allow me to restore my computer from my backups?

Hopefully, yes!  The one key factor is to match the BIOS boot mode used by your PC with the same mode used when booting the rescue media, i.e. both using UEFI or both using Legacy.

KB 59877: Acronis True Image: how to distinguish between UEFI and Legacy BIOS boot modes of Acronis Bootable Media

And if I get that wrong, will ATI not run altogether - or it might run just not restore correctly?

Getting the correct BIOS boot mode will ensure that Windows with boot correctly after being restored.

If your backup has an EFI System partition then the BIOS boot mode needs to be UEFI.

This did work! Thanks a million, Steve!

I did not imagine that it will be solved that way

Thanks, Steve!
