Change IP address of an existing Backup

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I made a whole system back up of my PC on my WD Cloud NAS.  The IP address of the WD Cloud NAS has now changed. It is now set as Static.  However I cannot access or validate this back up as Acronis is still looking for the old IP address which no longer exists and I am prompted for name and password which fails.  How can I access this backup to enter or change the new correct IP address?  I need to keep this backup.

Thanks David Clarke

Hi Dave, please advise the Acronis product being used (I assume that it is True Image), the version (for example ATI 2020) and build, also the operating system you are using (for example Windows 10 Home 64 build 1909), as this may change the suggested solution.

You should be able to change the IP address by editing the backup task, although sometimes that can be problematic. If that does not work, can you delete the task from ATI (you will be asked if you want to delete the task or delete the files as well, which you do not want to do); then try adding the task back into Acronis. You will have to navigate to the NAS which will probably require a user name and password.

I find it easier to you device name rather than IP address when creating a backup stored on my Synology NAS - I use the device name "DISKSTATION", which is independent of the IP address at any point of time.

Hope this helps.

Ian

Hi Ian,

Thanks for responding.  I am using Acronis True Image 2020 build 25700.  The backup was made in 2017 using the current version at that time. OS is Windows 10 Home 64.  I really need to get around the request to check Credentials.  Would prefer to move the backup to a named location.

Not sure if this will work - I have opened the Options on the actual backup and am making a reserve copy to another share location on the NAS drive.  Do not know if I will be able to access this if I wanted to restore?

Thanks,

Dave

Dave, this is a known limitation of ATI that any backup task going to a network destination can only be changed when the original destination is available!

The way around this issue would be as follows:

Make a note of your backup task configuration settings, i.e. source, schedule, backup scheme & automatic cleanup, notifications, exclusions etc.

Next, click on the option to Delete the task but only select to remove the settings not to remove everything (which would fail anyway!).

Once the task is removed from the ATI GUI, use the option to 'Add existing backup' which is found hidden behind a caret (v) to the right of the normal + Add backup option.

Navigate to your WD Cloud NAS at its new static address and to the folder where your backup files are stored then select the file with the most recent date, or for the new .tibx files, the initial .tibx 12kb file.

A task will be added to the ATI GUI using the file name selected.  Check to see if there is an option to rename to task, i.e. if it contains _full_ etc to remove those extra characters, then you will need to click on the Reconfigure button then set all the noted configuration settings for the task again, including the Source data.

I have similar issue. I had to factory reset the router after which the ip address of the WD cloud changed. I have a backup based on the old ip address. If I add existing backup and select the last tib file, it keeps asking for credentials for the old ip address location.  If I keep clicking Ignore for credentials then it creates a task however whenever I click on Recovery it again ask for credentials for the old ip address I am using Acronis True Image for Western Digital Version 2021, Build 38450

Vaibhav, welcome to these public User Forums.

You need to remove any backup tasks from the ATI GUI that reference your old IP address, plus you may also need to remove any stored credentials held on your PC.

See KB 58004: Acronis True Image 2016: Troubleshooting Issues Related to NAS Credentials - which still applies to later versions and has information on where credentials are stored in the Windows Registry.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the reply. I removed the entry under the old IP address for the backup. This is the entry I removed.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Acronis\Connections\smb\192.168.0.36\vr03]
"Username"="admin"
"Password"="001F4^JyDD5w4vrJJQ"
"UseNTAuth"=dword:00000000

I still get the prompt for credential for the path at this IP address. Let me know if I should send screenshots.

Thanks

Vaibhav

I did both and then added existing backup. That is when it ask me for the credentials for old path based on old ip address.

Vaibhav, the order in which you do things may be important here, i.e. remove the backup task from the Acronis application, then delete the credentials from the Registry, plus also check the Windows Credentials Manager doesn't also contain the same, old credentials for your NAS due to mapping Windows drive letters to NAS resources?

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the response again. I did remove the credentials from the registry as well as windows credentials in control panel and then added existing backup. ATI is still asking for credentials for the old path based on the old ip address. It seems like the backup has the path stored in it.

Thanks

Vaibhav

Vaibhav, if you deleted the backup task settings then there should be no reference to the old IP address / path.

Look in your C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts folder and check the script .tib.tis files that are stored there.  You can open these in Notepad and see the associated task name near the top of the XML data.  These are the only other place where the ip address is stored.

Hi Steve,

There is no entry for the old ip address in that  file under C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts folder

Thanks

Vaibhav, are you able to create a new backup task saving to the new NAS ip address?  That may be the best way forward here.
