Clone stuck on 'what to exclude' step despite drive having plenty of free space?

Thread needs solution

HI all - cloning a 750GB drive to a 250GB Western Digital SSD using the 'WD-ified' Acronis software they provide. I cloned once and the clone failed due to disk errors. I ran ChkDsk and then restarted the clone and now every time I tri and clone, despite wiping the SSD and using Acronis' own Cleanup Utility to remove and reinstall Acronis, I can't get the clone to even start.

The 750GB drive only has 126GB in use, so plenty of free space to clone to the smaller 250GB SSD, but after I choose the source and destination disk, it brings me to a 'What to exclude' step that says I don't have enough space to do the clone...

I've done this tens of times before on other machines, what's going on here and how can I solve it?

Today is just not my day with Acronis! :(

Thanks!

Did you select Proportional method for the clone operation?  If you did not do so and try again.

That wasn't even an option. If I remember right, I wouldn't get to the setting for proportional until after the thing kept popping up to exclude things, so I couldn't change it anyway.

Also, I hadn't made any changes at all to the default Acronis settings, and proportional is set as the default in Acronis anyway, isn't it? So I think this glitch was happening regardless of it probably already being set to proportional or not?

At any rate, I didn't have a lot of time, so I already solved it by not using Acronis...I ended up using the windows disk partition manager to shrink the partitions (as there was plenty of free space) to make them smaller than the drive I was cloning to, then just used Clonezilla instead, and then re-enlarged the petitions to fill any extra space after the clone was complete and I booted from the new drive.

Thanks for the reply though!

Hi,

Proportional cloning is implemented when choosing Automatic as the cloning method and is the first step in setup of the clone tool.  If you are cloning to a previously used target disk having partitions then the Automatic choice may not be what is selected.

The steps to cloning are provided in the link below:
