Cloning error - system not booting up in cloned disk

Thread needs solution

Hi ,

I am using Acronis True Image WD Edition to clone to my new SanDisk SSD. I don't see any error in graphical screen during cloning and it is completed fine. But system is not booting up on new cloned disk. Windows is asking to run recovery to fix it.

When i see TndLogs, i found below(pasted whole log). It would be great if you please help to fix it.

Nallappan, welcome to these public User Forums.

See KB 2201: Support for OEM Versions of Acronis Products which applies to all OEM versions of ATI supplied with hardware purchases.

The Try & Decide logs have no relevance to any issues encountered with cloning.

What type of PC is this?  Is it a desktop / tower PC or is it a laptop / notebook PC?

How does your PC boot from the BIOS into Windows?
Run the command: msinfo32 in Windows and look for the BIOS mode value in the right panel of the report it produces.  Does this show UEFI or does it show Legacy (or a disk drive make)?

What version of Windows is being used?  Is this Windows 10?

How did you perform the disk clone?
Was this from Windows using the ATI GUI application?
Was it from the Acronis Rescue Media used to boot the PC?

What type of SSD are you cloning to?
Is it a SATA SSD (the same type as your source drive being cloned from)?
Is it a NVMe M.2 SSD?

What drive are you cloning from?
How are the drives connected?

Please see KB 56634: Acronis True Image: how to clone a disk - and review the step by step guide given there.

Note: the first section of the above KB document directs laptop users to KB 2931: How to clone a laptop hard drive - and has the following paragraph:

It is recommended to put the new drive in the laptop first, and connect the old drive via USB. Otherwise you will may not be able to boot from the new cloned drive, as Acronis True Image will apply a bootability fix to the new disk and adjust the boot settings of the target drive to boot from USB. If the new disk is inside the laptop, the boot settings will be automatically adjusted to boot from internal disk. As such, hard disk bays cannot be used for target disks. For example, if you have a target hard disk (i.e. the new disk to which you clone, and from which you intend to boot the machine) in a bay, and not physically inside the laptop, the target hard disk will be unbootable after the cloning.

KB 59877: Acronis True Image: how to distinguish between UEFI and Legacy BIOS boot modes of Acronis Bootable Media

Hi Steve,
Thank you for your response.

Please find my answers
It is a laptop and using windows 10.
Bios mode is UEFI.
Cloned from Acronis True Image WD Edition GUI. Chose disk clone option.

Bought new Sandisk ssd and cloning from my existing HDD to new SSD.
Added new SSD in place of CD drive
Clone completed fine from GUI and when it reboots it throws windows error and asking to recover or else its keeps hanging on black screen. But i can see all files in cloned disk.

I followed the same steps as mentioned in document you sent. But i am booting now with 2 disks, both HDD and SSD.

Thanks for the further information.  You should never be trying to boot into Windows after cloning with both the original and cloned disks present as this causes issues with Windows.

Have you checked that the BIOS settings have 'Windows Boot Manager' (from the new SSD) selected as the boot device, and not the same from the original drive?

Try removing the original HDD and moving the SSD to its place in the laptop, then booting the laptop with only the SSD installed?

If the above doesn't work, then put the HDD back as it was originally, remove the SSD and test that the original drive is still able to boot into Windows?

Hi Steve,
Sorry for late reponse.

Have you checked that the BIOS settings have 'Windows Boot Manager' (from the new SSD) selected as the boot device, and not the same from the original drive? - Yes, set my new SSD as primary boot device in BIOS. Was not able to boot, asked to recover and tried to recover but not succeeded.

Try removing the original HDD and moving the SSD to its place in the laptop, then booting the laptop with only the SSD installed? - Tried this, got error same as above

If the above doesn't work, then put the HDD back as it was originally, remove the SSD and test that the original drive is still able to boot into Windows? - tried this , able to boot.

Also set my HDD as primary boot and SSD as secondary - Can boot and also can see files from SSD.

Nallappan, when you are booted into Windows from the original HDD and the msinfo32 report for the BIOS mode shows as UEFI then in the BIOS settings you will see 'Windows Boot Manager' as the boot device.

This needs to be the same when you have the SSD installed as the only boot device.

If you still have a problem, then I would suggest taking a different approach instead of using cloning.

Personally I have always used Backup & Recovery to migrate to a new or larger drive.

The steps in outline are as follows:

  1. Create the Acronis Rescue Media (use the Simple option for WinPE)
  2. Test booting your PC from the rescue media, ensuring you understand how to boot in UEFI mode and can 'see' your current HDD drive and an external backup drive to hold a full disk backup image.
  3. Make a new full Disk backup of the working HDD to an external drive as a one-off backup action.
  4. Shutdown the PC, remove the current HDD and install the new SSD.
  5. Boot from the Acronis Rescue Media with your backup drive connected.
  6. Recover the Backup from step 3. to the new SSD.
  7. Check the Log messages before exiting from the rescue media (all logs are lost on exit) to check all is OK.
  8. If all ok, disconnect the external drive, remove the rescue media and restart the PC normally from the new SSD.
  9. When you have confirmed all is ok with the new SSD, make a new backup again to include any new device drivers installed for the new SSD.

KB 63295: Acronis True Image 2020: How to restore your computer with WinPE-based or WinRE-based media

Hi Steve,

Thank you for all the efforts you taken to help me. Appreciate that.

Gone through the articles and it looks like takes little time to perform this clone and have to further troubleshoot if any problem again.

Hence i decided to install windows freshly on new SSD and i have done that successfully.

Now added my HDD as secondary drive.

So i am closing this thread for now and may if required any help in future i will post it.

Thanks again for all the help.
