Cloning to a larger drive

Thread solved

Hi, I am having trouble cloning my 120 gig SSD on to a 512 gig SSD. I still end up with a drive the size of the original, the remainder of the disk is not even shoeing. I have tried manually but with no success, all I get at the end of the manual process is "the selected disk will be restored as is, disk layout will remain GPT.

Nick, welcome to these public User Forums.

Looking at your second image, this shows 2 recovery partitions, one of which is located immediately after the Windows C: OS partition.  This can cause the issue you are seeing but is easy to remedy as follows:

  1. Download a copy of the free MiniTool Partition Wizard software and install this.
  2. Using the Partition Wizard, move the 1GB Recovery partition to the end of the unallocated 363 GB space, so that all unallocated space is adjacent to C:
  3. Resize the C: partition to expand into that unallocaed space and increase its size.

As usual Steve is spot on with his advice.

Hi, many thanks for your help, I am still confused as to what to do, I am delving into uncharted territory (for me). What wizard do I need? I cannot see one that is just labelled Partition Wizzard.

Nick, the assumption here was that you had actually performed the clone and now had your new Kingston 500GB drive with all the correct partitions but in their original sizes.

You latest screen image shows that the Kingston drive is empty, so it not appropriate to use the Partition Wizard per my earlier post.

Please complete the Acronis Clone so that you have got a duplicate copy of your original 120GB drive on the Kingston drive.

Note: I would recommend making a full Disk backup of the original Gigabyte drive before doing the clone if you haven't already created one - this is your safety net in case of errors etc.

I seem to have messed up! Hellllllllllpppp..... I have turned the partition into unallocated space somehow.

Hi, I am trying to re arrange the Gigabyte drive. When I clone it on to the Kingston drive will I be able to rearrange the partitions?

Nick, this is why it is recommended to always make a full disk backup before starting any operations of this type.

Yes, after cloning from the Gigabyte drive to the Kingston, you will then be able to rearrange the partitions using the partition wizard software.

Which drive are you booting from in order to capture the screen shots of your drives?

The Gigabyte drive contains the OS so I am booting from that... I am backing the drive up now on to a USB stick. If push comes to shove,I guess I could do a fresh windows install on to the new drive and restore my back up on to that?

Nick, once you have made a full disk backup, you just need to boot from Acronis Rescue Media and then restore that backup to your new disk without doing a new Windows install (which would be wiped out anyway, so just wasting time installing!).

Your Gigabyte drive is in GPT with an EFI partition, so any restore / recovery need to be done when the Acronis rescue media is booted in UEFI mode.

See KB 63226: Acronis True Image 2020: how to create bootable media and KB 59877: Acronis True Image: how to distinguish between UEFI and Legacy BIOS boot modes of Acronis Bootable Media

This is a safer alternative to using cloning to use Backup & Recovery as you can put your original, working Gigabyte drive to one side, disconnected, then recover your backup from your backup location to the new empty Kingston drive.

KB 63295: Acronis True Image 2020: How to restore your computer with WinPE-based or WinRE-based media

When doing the restore of your backup, this needs to be done as a Disk & Partition restore and at the top Disk selection level.

Please see forum topic: [How to] recover an entire disk backup - and in particular the attached PDF document which shows a step-by-step tutorial for doing this type of recovery / restore.

Cheers, many thanks, I will work through that. Folk like me shouldn't be allowed to mess with partitions and stuff!

Well, I seem to have gotten somewhere! There is just a small 29 gig partition I can't get rid of but I guess I can live with that. Many thanks for your help Steve....

Nick, your disk layout does not look correct to me as it is missing the vital hidden / system partitions (EFI, System Reserved, Recovery) and is unlikely to boot into Windows without these.

It is booting ok, I have restarted several times...

I did delete the FAT32 partition as I am not using that file system...

If the drive is booting OK into Windows without any other drives connected, then you should be good to go.

All sorted, many thanks for your help....
