Cloning steps

Thread solved

I’ve used Acronis True Image for Sabrent (for windows) over the years.  It seems to break the cloning process into 9 steps.  The first three go by so quickly that I have never seen them listed on the status window.  Is there a listing of the 9 steps anywhere?

I’m using the latest version (just downloaded today) 39895.  I’m pretty sure the steps have not changed for a while.

Nick, welcome to these public User Forums.

See KB 2201: Support for OEM Versions of Acronis Products which applies to all OEM versions of ATI supplied with hardware purchases.

KB 61665: Acronis True Image 2019, 2020 and 2021: Active Cloning in Windows

Also see KB 56634: Acronis True Image: how to clone a disk - and review the step by step guide given there.

Note: the first section of the above KB document directs laptop users to KB 2931: How to clone a laptop hard drive - and has the following paragraph:

It is recommended to put the new drive in the laptop first, and connect the old drive via USB. Otherwise you will may not be able to boot from the new cloned drive, as Acronis True Image will apply a bootability fix to the new disk and adjust the boot settings of the target drive to boot from USB. If the new disk is inside the laptop, the boot settings will be automatically adjusted to boot from internal disk. As such, hard disk bays cannot be used for target disks. For example, if you have a target hard disk (i.e. the new disk to which you clone, and from which you intend to boot the machine) in a bay, and not physically inside the laptop, the target hard disk will be unbootable after the cloning.

Hi Steve - thanks for that.

I should have been a bit more specific.  I have successfully cloned drives using True Image and understand the process as outlined in the user documentation (as referenced in the links you provided).

The "steps" I was referring to are the 9 steps that are listed in the status window after the cloning begins.  Typically, the first three steps happen so quickly, that you can't see them nor what the title/label was for those three.  I think the first viewable step is number 4 "Copying and merging partitions" (which is presented for about a minute).  Oddly, step 5 seems to have the same title/label and is viewable for about an hour or so.  By the time I get back to check on the cloning, it is complete, so I never get to see what the labels are for the other steps (6-9).

I was hoping for a listing of what each of those 9 steps were as presented in the status window of the cloning process.

When searching for the exact wording of step 4 when I found a reference to the knowledge base article mvp_assistant_tool.  Which mentioned a log viewer.  After installing/starting the MVP Assistant tool (download link is on the article page) and opening up the log tab and the default file (ti_demon_*), I saw the 9 steps:

  1. Clearing disk (disk 2)
  2. Clearing disk (disk 2 - again)
  3. Clearing disk (disk 2 - again)
  4. Copying and merging partitions (ESP)
  5. Copying and merging partitions (OS partition)
  6. Copying and merging partitions (Windows Recovery)
  7. Copying and merging partitions (Image - assumedly Dell)
  8. Copying and merging partitions (DELLSUPPORT)
  9. Copying MBR

The destination disk was new, which might explain why the first three steps were done so quickly.  The MVP tool Log Viewer also provided some details as to what each step was doing - so great info there.  Thanks to the developer for this tool!

Steve - thanks again for your help.
