Copy or Cloine GPT partition to Disk

Thread needs solution

So with the decrease in ssd prices I purchased another SSD for my system. I was hoping to copy my "D:" drive from a partitioned spinner disk to the new SSD. Then explain Drive ":E:" to the entire spinner drive. I believe the spinner drive is GPT partitioned. I have run a complete backup of the entire hard drive both partitions. The one issue I am concerned with is my "d:" contains most of my programs and I really don't want to reinstall them all. Is this possible? The original partition is 2 tb but only about 400 gigs is filled, and the target ssd is 1 TB. I can make recuse media that works under acronis 2011 when i originally built this system, so I can assume the newest version 2020 can wok.

Eric, welcome to these public User Forums.

Please forget about using Cloning if only wanting to copy a single partition from your HDD to a new SSD - cloning working on a whole disk basis and becomes complicated when not wanting to clone the full disk and all partitions!

If you have installed the new SSD drive in your computer, then you should be able to simply recover your backup of just the D: (programs) partition from your backup drive to the new SSD using the main ATI applications running within Windows.

Note: If your Windows OS boots in UEFI mode, then the recovery to the new SSD will result in the SSD using GPT for the partition format.  You can check how the OS boots by running the command: msinfo32  within Windows then looking at the BIOS mode shown in the right side panel of the report produced.

Once you have restored the D: partition to the new SSD, then you can use Windows Disk Management to change the drive letters for the original D: partition on the HDD and the new SSD drive, making the SSD show as D: and changing the original D: to such as O:  This will give you the opportunity of checking that all your programs on D: are still working ok before you delete the old partition and expand the second partition to use the whole drive as E:

Thanks for the welcome and answer!

So to make sure i am clear.

Install drive in bios (Yes is UEFI)

Let system boot up normally*

Use Acronis to restore backed up partition to new drive.

Change orginal drive to drive O:

Change new ssd to drive D:

Reboot ( I assumed this step because for some reason my setup needs rebooting after any change)

Test software on drive D:

If successfull use disk management to delete drive O: and Expand Drive E:

* - was thinking this should be in another environment as to not cause links to be reset to O:?

Thanks Again

Eric, if you are worried about any links being changed to O: then simply remove the drive letter from O: and leave it as a hidden drive instead.

Ok so tried to restore backup from windoes ATI and it won't let me choose the new sad. I tried the rescue ATI USB and I could get to the step where I choose a new drive letter, however how do I change the old one from within the rescue USB?

Eric, there isn't a way of changing drive letters using the normal rescue media - you would need to do this from within Windows.
