Creating a custom backup scheme (GFS-modified?) on TrueImage and Cyber Home

Thread needs solution

Hi

I am currently using a Synology NAS box that I want to migrate over to a PC based NAS/Remote machine. Although I am not too happy with their Hyperbackup, their retention policy is quite good.

I am doing nightly backups with retention policy set to

keep daily backups for 1 week
keep weekly backups for 4 weeks
keep monthly backups for 4 months

I am currently evaluating TrueImage for backup options. I can do this implementing 3 different schemes, one for daily, weekly, monthly. Problem is each of these scheme will result in a redundant full image that is independently tracked. This will be noticeable space hog if my source location is quite large.

I asked Hyperbackup's test team and it seems that they are running a modified version of GFS where, they start consolidating/merging the incrementals based on the specified rules. E.g., at the end of week 2, they consolidate the the incremental to create a new synthetic image. It also seems to be only incremental based, no diff backups.

Any recommendations/suggestions. Can I do this using TI, Cyber Home, or any other Acronis tool?

Amol, to my knowledge, Acronis home products (ATI or ACPHO) cannot do what you are asking for here.  Each separate backup task has to have its own initial full backup image from which all further incremental backups are based on.

With ATI 2020, 2021 & ACPHO, Acronis use .TIBX files for disks & partitions backups where incremental 'slices' are consolidated within the initial .TIBX file so keeping a single file, but if you are backing up your Synology NAS, then you will be using a Files & Folders backup which still uses .TIB files and creates separate incremental .tib files.

Personally, having used my own Synology NAS for some years, I would keep with such a dedicated NAS solution rather than going for one based on a PC.
