Fail USB boot

Thread needs solution

I have a HP laptop that Im in process to change the disc in.

Im replacing the original M.2 with a Samung EVO 970.
So i want to clone it.
But I run into problems.

I first edit the settings in Bios to Legacy and turn off Secure Boot.
Then I boot, and the only choice that works is USB flash memory with UEFI.
Then I get to the choice to start Acronis 64bit.
But after that I only get an error message.
"The selected boot device failed"

I have tried with both Acronis 2020 and 2021 boot USB.
Same problem.

Need help !!

Micke, the first mistake being made here is in trying to boot any NVMe M.2 SSD in Legacy boot mode, especially when that SSD normally boots using UEFI.

The next issue is using cloning for this upgrade if you are cloning from the original internal M.2 SSD to the Samsung Evo 970 if this is connected externally, as this is likely to not be bootable if completed.

Please see KB 56634: Acronis True Image: how to clone a disk - and review the step by step guide given there.

Note: the first section of the above KB document directs laptop users to KB 2931: How to clone a laptop hard drive - and has the following paragraph:

It is recommended to put the new drive in the laptop first, and connect the old drive via USB. Otherwise you will may not be able to boot from the new cloned drive, as Acronis True Image will apply a bootability fix to the new disk and adjust the boot settings of the target drive to boot from USB. If the new disk is inside the laptop, the boot settings will be automatically adjusted to boot from internal disk. As such, hard disk bays cannot be used for target disks. For example, if you have a target hard disk (i.e. the new disk to which you clone, and from which you intend to boot the machine) in a bay, and not physically inside the laptop, the target hard disk will be unbootable after the cloning.

I have upgraded my own HP Omen laptop multiple times to move from the original 128GB M.2 SSD to a Samsung 500GB and most recently to a Samsung 1TB drive.
